Hello,

I am new in this forum, retired from the US Government and living in Miami. I have a '93 MB 500E and a '13 VW Jetta. In the past I had many cars [MB, Audi, vintage Maserati, Ferrari, Renault, Peugeot, Citroen, Fiat] not all at the same time of course, but never a Mini.

I have been offered a 2004 John Cooper Works car with 20K miles and he following mods:

Tein Superstreet Custom Coilover; KitTein EDFC for coilovers; Alta 24mm rear sway bars' Alta rear Heim-joint suspension with adjustable trailing arms; StopTech Big Brake Kit4 Piston Calipers, 13" floating rotors, Axis Brake Pads, Ferrodo rear brake pads, Stainless steel brake lines, ATE brake fluid; Ireland Adjustable street/track camber plates; OBX Stainless steel headers with jet hot coating; Alta Intercooler with air diverter and water spray; Alta cold air intake with foam filter; 62MM throttle body; 180 degree thermostat; 400CC injectors' Screamin' Demon High Output Coil; High flow catalytic converter; Crank pulley (2% lightened); Supercharger pulley' Alta overflow catch can bb.

I am worried about the mods. My question is, how much more expensive will be to repair/maintain this car? in comparison with a stock car. A few of my previous cars were money pits and I don't that to happen again.

I have to answer the owner tonight.

Part of the question as to how reliable a car will be thats been modified, is how well has the mod been done? professionally? all new parts? secondhand parts? nicely fitted? bit of a thrown together bodge? Do all the parts work with each other to give the desired performance result or is it a works in progress, nearly there but not quite, doesnt go as it was expected?
If you know the previous owner and they were a type of nothing but the best will do person then youre probably ok but someone trying to do it all cut price you might be onto something that might end up costing you.
Plus its ok fitting all this tuning gear to a healthy engine but if the engine has been well thrashed before it might not last long now.
If youre at all concerned get an engineers report on the car, and if in doubt keep well clear, especially as youve experienced duds in the past too.

You can't really refer to it as a "John Cooper Works" car. It started life as a Cooper S model and at some point a dealer fitted a JCW Engine Tuning Kit ... most likely the 200 bhp kit.

With highly modified cars like this one, unless you know the previous owners, you can't tell how hard the car was driven.

This '04 is still available for $3.5K less, it may be a post mid-like crisis or a whim but I really like this car over anything I have seen on ebay, CL, etc. I contacted the previous owner, a wealthy investment banker who got bored with it, passed it to his wife but she did not like a manual transmission, like my wife. He sold it when the car had 10K miles. My question is, even if it was driven hard what could be the damage having the car only 19K miles? It seems that the car has been taken good care of all its life.

You said that you were concerned about running costs for repair/maintenance.

I bought a MCS with JCW tuning kit plus motorsport spec 6 piston caliper front brakes. One of the biggest shocks I have got from ownership is that I am having to replace the front brake pads AND discs almost on an annual basis at huge expense.

If I were looking at the car as you describe it, I'd certainly want to check on the price for these kind of brake 'service items'.

Also. sounds like the car was prepared for 'track day' use or at least as a very fast road car, so highly likely that it has been driven hard albeit over very few miles since 2004.
