England Cooling fan sounds like a jet plane

Hi

Just got a 2003 Cooper S and notice the colling fans sound like a jet plane and also come on even when I have locked up the car

It seems like a good thing to be keeping the engine cool even when the car is stopped but I am wondering what effect this will have on the battery - see, only had the car a few days and already worrying about it breaking down

Have you checked your coolant level?

The coolant system is supposed to be flushed every four years.

If the low speed fan resistor stops working it goes straight to high speed which sounds like a jet plane......common fault but can lead to overheating as the high speed fan does not cut in until temperature is higher and has no help from a non-functioning low speed fan.

Hi caveman, good call, a visual check and the level looked fine (dirty water bottle doesn't help) but made sure it was filled and fan has been behaving itself

Reminder to self, double check everything and make sure the levels are as high as the old containers make them look!

Cheers

I would also recommend checking the fan is coming on correctly as mab01uk says. My daughters 2003 Cooper has blown its resistor so I am fitting a replacement as per the link.

The low speed fan is supposed to come on early and keep the temperature down; and the high speed only if the car gets really hot. The loud fan noise is the high speed fan and means the car is getting very hot, in normal conditions the high speed fan should only come on occasionally.

Unfortunately the resistor is not available from BMW and the value of it is a bit unusual. There is a fix documented on that link with a more readily available resistor which seems to have worked.
