I need to take my R53 to garage to fix the timing chain tensioner, but on close inspection, I hear a strange noise from the engine. To my ear, there are 2 noises, one from the supercharger and other from the upper part of the engine.
Here is the link, engine was already warm, it's not cold start:
In March I had the supercharger serviced, but as I couldn't get supercharger oil I put 5w30 inside, and everything in supercharger looked good (gears), but it did change the sound to what you can hear in the video. I'll change to proper oil and look what's happening inside soon.
But does the other sound from engine sound weird or is it just in my head?
If you couldn't get the correct oil for the super charger then you should have left it alone until you had the correct oil. Expensive mistake you've made buddy, it sounds shyte!
There were many topics about it and I thought it was safe. Well, I hope it could be saved as I didn't make many kilometers with that oil. If not, it's up for a rebuild
Is that possible to put a supercharger from an other car brand on a mini even if it's the same type? Just wane know, hope i don't ever need to change a supercharger.
So a month ago I heard the strange noise on a cold start from the engine, and I self-diagnosed it as timing chain tensioner. I took the car to MINI dealership and they confirmed it needs to be replaced. Upon close inspection I also detected noise from supercharger, you heard it from the video in 1. post.
As I needed time to source rebuilt supercharger I took car home to the garage and leave it there without fixing timing chain tensioner until I got the new supercharger. So today I drove the car to the mechanic (normal driving) and everything was fine. When I started the car to take it in the shop it sounded terribly for about 30 seconds, here is the video:
Thanks! Now I'm not sure does it make sense to diy or pay someone who already have cam tool... Price is same but I'll need to wait for tool to arrive from Amazon min. 3 weeks.
The chain has to be suspended by a bit of rope or by another set of hands while you undo the 2 10mm bolts holding the rails in place and while refitting them lol
You can do it yourself quite easily.
But if your pressed for time get someone to do it.
As you really helped me a lot, I think it's only fair to update you on topic
So, last weekend I finally had garage and time to pull the supercharger out of the car. Also, I spoke to the mechanic who "serviced" my supercharger before by adding 5w30 oil, and the good news is that he added that oil only in the smaller tank on water pump side. So oil from bigger tank was original supercharger oil.
To be honest, I expected to see little oil in both tanks, due to the bad sound of it, but to my surprise, I drained a lot of it:
This is a 0,5L bottle, so I think it's pretty good amount from the pulley side.
I found a little bit of oil leaked from water pump side to rotors.
I expected to find gears in that part to be in worst condition.
Now I wait until pulley puller arrive, so I can open another half
I opened other end of supercharger and it look really good and healthy. But I'll send it for rebuild.
Now is the question what could make that noise? I think it's not supercharger.
Also, I decided to check engine and change rocker gasket while my engine is in parts.
Engine look pretty good:
But on the cover I found some strange thing. It's like silicone or gasket sealer:
It's not sludgy.
