Sorry to create a new thread, but my situation whilst similar isn't the same to the one already posted.
In essence, only had the car 24 hours, but the car pretty much always (with odd exceptions) unlocks, but I'm finding that many times whilst testing, it didn't lock ... seems odd that it will do one but not the other ? It also locks when you drive off ?
Any further thoughts please ? It's a Cooper S 2006
Hiya ... thanks for the reply, mines weird as it will lock and unlock, but not then do it again 2 minutes later ... but the next time you go eg the next day to it ... it will unlock ? Bizarre ... I took it to Mini today and they recommended, as you say, £351 change of the rear view mirror and that may / may not fix it ... well for £351 I would want a GUARANTEE that it fixes it ;o)
Yeah this is the problem I have too really, BMW say most likely need a new key, but the locksmith tried to input the bar codes, and it just said "unable to communicate" leading me to think it's the receiver which is at fault, and I don't need new key at all!
So for me at least, I might just get another receiver and try again to input the bar codes (you can actually pick up a used receiver for about £25 off eBay) at least that way I wont spend on a new key if it's not the issue lol
Hopefully a £25 fix (plus £30 for the locksmith) will finally solve the problem
But if not then I only spent £25 to try the cheap fix (locksmith wont charge if he can't fix it)
Thanks ... this may well be my best way forward ... annoying that this seems to be happening to quite a lot of mini's so Mini must know that their is an inherent issue here ?
But surely if it's unlocking then the receiver is working correctly? - I'd bet it doesn't have a separate lock/unlock receiver circuit.
Batteries would be my best bet (cheapest option) - I believe the key has a rechargeable battery it, but they don't last for ever and their capacity diminishes with use over time (it could be the original battery and therefore 10 years old!).
It might unlock/lock after overnight as the battery has had time to rest/recover but the capacity is so low that a second unlock/lock doesn't work - same after being in work all day - the key isn't used for several hours so the battery recovers slightly and works but won't have enough capacity for a second press. It could also be that the lock button switch on the remote is simply worn out or intermittent.
Yeah don't rush into anything.
As abovr advice it has rechargeable batteries, so give them a chance to charge up/cycle. Maybe one key is better than another.
The 2 button remote you can just pry off the back of the key with a small screwdriver, and you will see the battery which can be replaced CR2032 I think?
@rjb2014 has probably hit the nail on the head. If you can solder then you can replace the battery. Here is a video to give you an idea of what your looking at
