Parking light / side light issue

Hi all,

Could really do with some swift advice please as worried battery will flatten quickly and this is my daily drive.

Went out to the car tonight and noticed that both small side lights are on on the car irrespective of key in ignition or not ... lock the car and walk away ... still on ... it's a new thing as wasn't there when first purchased the car but clearly despite it only being what looks like parking light power but could be side light I guess ... (as both are on when car locked and key in my pocket)

anyone else's had this and any ideas how to reset this ?

Cheers in advance ...

So we are taking about (possibly) the led side lights ... the lights between the main xenon lights and the fog lights ... effectively the blinkers orange lights and the small white lights ... it's the white lights / possibly led's that are remaining on ( just the white not the orange bit)

Yes. Just the White elements (looks like 2 tiny bulbs) stay lit ...

Have you checked the bulbs? They should be W5W and some folk change these for led's and through time they begin to fail so stay lit. Also the battery could be a factor so that may be worth having checked too

The battery is a new one Sean ... well month old so shouldn't be an issue but bulbs look like very small bulbs rather than LEDs ? Is it normal to light like this then ? I say normal I mean a mini feature ? N

The bulbs are w5w's so whip them out and check them. It may be worth sticking a new pair in to see if this helps as they are cheap enough. If they still illuminate with new bulbs then check the terminals and work back as it could be an earthing issue.

I want to put LEDs in my front side lights as they are a horrible dim yellow. I bought some on eBay a while ago but they are too big to go in. There's naff all space in there. However I took a picture recently of the standard W5W beside an LED that WILL fit. Might help as to which your car has.

I managed to get led's to fit in to my side lights Nigel. Keep looking on the bay as there are smaller ones and look for ones with just a couple of led's in them as I found any more than 4 were over powering

Thread resurrection.
Fitted LED sidelights on Tuesday, from a mate. Yes Sean they are the tiny 5 LED jobs, with one row of 4 round they sides and one on end. So they fit. But they are not CANBUS ready. 2005 R53.
They don't bring a light up on the dash but they are on all the time. With car switched off, there is a tiny 'residual' glow, they are not fully on, just glowing. Don't think it's enough to draw much ampage and flatten the battery.
Will have to buy some CANBUS jobs.
Strange thing is one of the standard sidelight bulbs was out and nothing showed on the dash? Any idea why?

You'll find they go off completely after around 5 minutes

Thanks Johnny. I'll go and have a look now.......... two mins later ........ Yup they are out, no glow. Great. So I don't need to worry about it or get different bulbs? Must be they take so little current that the residual in the wires keeps them running till they have used it up?
Never doubted you Johnny

I think my error free bulbs may also remain lit for a few minutes too Nigel. I've removed them at the moment as I fired them in a friends car as he liked the look of them and I haven't bought new ones for my car yet

Hmmm, so even 'error free' stay on for a while. I'm going to fit LEDs to the reversing lights, now I've found they are 955 W16W Wedge Fit. Wonder if they will stay on for a while after you've come out of reverse? Could be a bit nasty, not to say illegal?
