I would have thought that the worst price you would get for an 'S' in the US would have been trade in, and the best price would have been private sale...? Would have thought that it would sell easily privatly.

I am not surprised. Dealers always try to get away with the lowest price possible, giving them the highest profit. Try to sell it yourself. Check Autotrader. It is rare to see a used MCS for sale by a private owner. Most are dealers asking for almost the same price as new.
I tend to judge dealerships by the way they treat a persons trade. I am realistic about profits and values but this dealer sounds pretty sleazy. A car that sold for 25k new with 16k miles on it and want to "give" you 15k? Go somewhere else, they do not come across as very reputable.
I just checked Kelly Blue Book and NADA guides. Neither site has any pricing for the MINI. I would love to know where this dealer came up with their numbers. 15k, are they kidding?

I hope thats the case. I heard that these cars retained 120% of thier resale last year and it sickend me to see that was the best anyone could do ( I went to about 4 dealerships). You say Autotrader is the best way to sell?

the dealer is going to give you book on the car or less. your best bet is to sell it yourself eitheron ebay r in alocal newspaper.

Yeah, I figured they would do as much, but blue book does not even exist yet on these cars. I guess I will begin advertising in the papers.

Hey, you have to pay for the convenience of not selling it yourself. Very few dealers will re-sell a car they take on trade - most wholesale it immediately. And why should the dealer lose money? And, besides, no one else will think it's worth what you think it is.

How do I know this? I'm trying to sell my van, and it's worth more to me than anyone else. I'll end up taking a beating.

Yeah I do understand this, however to take a 10,000 hit seems excessive.

I understand profit but at 15k thats close to 8-10k profit since before i bought mine new i scoured everyplace trying to find a used MCS for around 20k

a local dealer had one (still has, last i knew...) a 02 MCS barely any options except leather with 2000 mile and I could go no lower than 26k. I even went back with my order for my brand new one for 23k and couldnt get them to sell the used one for less.

I'm approaching a similar situation with looking to trade in a 2003 CVT for a 2003 5spd, which is on order. I have it in the paper here for sale, but have had very few calls so far.
Of course, I'm expecting/hoping that a buyer will show up right on time just before my new baby arrives!!

-?? Isn't it ironic though, that MINI dealers use it's low depreciation of value as a selling point and then turn around and offer so little on a trade in MINI -??

Yeah its frustrating. I hoped I would be buying a car that I would have no problem selling and for a reasonable resale at that.

Sold my MCS here on MINI2, and also advertised on Autotrader.

Both generated interest, and the eventual buyer came via MINI2.

Much better $$$ than dealer trade-in, and I got to meet a great MINI2 member too.

Good experience, worth the effort.

Just post a good picture of the car to help the sale along.

Chris.
