Question Break In Period?

I was just wondering what different instructions people had for a break in period. All my dealer told me was to keep it below 5k rpms for the first thousand miles, and that seemed a bit lax to me.

Cooper S: Recently awarded the highest FunUnits per Dollar rating by JD Power and Associates.

There have been numerous threads about break-in. It's wise to do a search.

However, I would add to your dealer's recommendations: avoid full throttle for the first 1,000 miles, vary the revs (i.e. stay off cruise control), and don't go over 80-90 mph until you're through the breakin-in period.

Yeah my dealer told me "Keep it under 100 for the first thousand miles"... that was it...

The Owners Manual says for the first 2500km, not over 4500rpm or 150km/h.

Break in Period - Manual

The Mini documents say under 4500 RPMor under 95 MPH for first 1250 miles mph and then gradually increase. I sort of enjoyed the 95 MPH limit. Where are these guys driving?

But what does violating the Break in Period mean to Mini?

What is the consequence of exceeding the RPM limit, by missing a gear shift during the Break in Period? Anybody know?

go to www.whiteroofradio.com and listen to the newest podcast. they go over this in great detail, including what can/will happen if you do not obey the break in period.

Even if you don't...

follow the break in period you'd have to be pretty hard on a clutch to burn it out quickly. And that means popping it, riding it and generally any abuse you can think of and that would burn it out whether or not you'd already broken in the engine.

I love the show. I have never missed an installment. Me and a guy at work (soon to be MCS Checkmate owner) listen... usually before we watch DVDs on a PC.
