Guys i have a Mini Cooper S and it started to form some squeeky noises when braking..
I took it over to the BMW agency in my country and they told me that the Brake disks (rotors) and Brake pads should be changed.I have used my car for 26,000Km. Could anyone share with me his experience or comments about this issue? And is it the right milage for changing both the disks and pads? your help is appreciated.
all depends on how much you use your brakes ... it's like a clutch your mileage may vary. To see if they were wearing properly (ie: no caliper hang ups etc.) you need to compare the thickness remaining on both pads from the same wheel ... if one is worn down to nothing and the other side is like new then chances are your caliper hung up and this lead to premature wear.
I had my brake pads and brake discs (rotors for americans) replaced under warranty as they had 'excessive' wear and the discs (rotors) were badly scored and the pads were in very bad condition.. this was on all 4 corners (although the rears were visually worse).
When i questioned my dealer why they were in such bad condition he said that I would have to of had been using my brakes to there limit every time I braked since owning the car... Now I bought the car as an ex demo so I questions that if the brakes had not been bedded in properly could that have something todo with it (he didn't answer).
Now I'm not pretending that I don't use the brakes hard sometimes and I've also been to a few track days (went to croft, then to the parade laps at rockingham and snetterton this year) however I wouldn't say I over use the brakes at all. I have only ever experienced brake fade 2-3 times on the road and I would've thought that if I was using them to there limits then surely they would fade more...
That aside BMW replaced them no quibbles but since having them all replaced the rears discs look as though they have started to develop the first stages of scoring on them, this is after approx 1300 miles. I bedded them in for 300 miles (urban driving) even though the BMW service guy said they only needed 100 miles, I’m starting to think there is something else fundamentally wrong with my brake system and I’m looking at a big-disc conversion…
I've attached a pic of the original brakes (Which were replaced at 11100 miles). This was just after I washed the car so it enhances what they look like (with the rust scoring).
