The terrible truth of city driving has just been revealed to me ...........my 4 month old MCS has an avarage speed of 14 mph over 2740 miles...............on my bike my avarage is 11 mph over the last 100 miles.................
It's funny you should bring this up, I used to have a Clio 172 which averaged 18 - 22 mph on my 54 mile round trip to work every day, but it blew up after 28500 miles (fan belt broke, fouled the timing belt, all 16 valves bent or broken, but that's another story for another thread!) so when it was being fixed I borrowed my girlfriend's 13 year old 1 litre Nissan Micra and did the journey to and from work in EXACTLY the same time. To the minute. The first time I did it I set off really early (and arrived really early!) expecting it to take much longer. It was then that I questioned why I was putting up with group 16 insurance and poor economy. I now have a One D and my fuel cost is one third of what it was, my insurance is about one fifth of what it was and I now have so much more style and reliability. I was thinking about getting a Cooper S but I'm really glad I got a D. I followed a guy in a Ferrari 360 Modena around Leeds outer ring road on Friday and stayed with him for about 7 miles. Of course I would swap him, but it's no faster in traffic than mine.
Regarding the fuel consumption ,the computer says 24.7 mpg.
Of course one of the advantages of crawling around so slowly is a) everyone gets achance to have a good look and b) I have absolutley no stone chips to the front end or any danger of cracking the windscreen and c) even if I have the yo yo effect I'm blissfully ignorant as I've never had the chance to accelerate fast enough to tell one way or the other !
Yes I am in London and the place is a nightmare with traffic humps in almost every street, width restrictors, congestion charging, overzealous traffic wardens ,cameras in bus lanes (cost me Ģ50 last month for this I was in it for 40 seconds) parking meters Ģ3:00 and more per hour. Generally my local Borough couldnt organise a pixx up in a brewry, but by christ they can collect money with a determination I wish they'd apply to other services.........anyway I still think its the best car Ive had ,everyone admires it,even if they are two a penny now.
I had a Peugot Speedfight for about a year and then decided to take my bike test and bought a R850 R,and put that in for a F650 GS,lost loads of money on all of them ! Speedfight in retrospect was the most economical and best to get around on.
So now I just peddal around on .........you guesed it ,a Mountain bike,....as they say about the 4 x 4s the nearest my bike will get to a mountain is mounting the kerb
I cant believe I am the world record holder ,anyone know the address for the Guiness Book of records ?
