Has the addition of an aftermarket air-intake system minimized the Yo-Yo effect?
Owners;
My car is new < 3k miles.
I am a relatively easy driver with my MCS, I average 30 mpg combination city and hwy driving. I have the dreaded Yo-Yo effect. It is especially noticed when I have passengers and or when I accelerate faster than normal (like said I normally accelerate at an easy rate).
Has the addition of an aftermarket air-intake system minimized the Yo-Yo effect?
Or do I need to see about getting the v38 ECU upgrade?

I'll try and let you know in a couple days. I drive mainly like you but let it loose every once in a while. I'm going in for service and I'll have them put v.38 in.
welcome to the site.
You'll get conflicting answers on this one so don't plan on any resolution to your question.
I've run 2 different intakes and neither has made the yoyo go away permanently. Nor exhaust system, nor 15% pulley, nada.
I didn't know I still had yo-yo, until I bought an aftermarket intake. It's easy to tell when yo-yo hits, as the sound through the intake goes wah-wah-wah-wah, with much more of the effect being audible than a sense of the car actually surging.
"I'll shoot for the queen, and you for, well, whomever."
When you are at mid rpm's (3k-4.5k) and not at full throttle, the car seems to studder. It's not a clean acceleration like you get when you are at full throttle. It's most likely a software problem like the cold start problem that plagued the early builds like mine.
Thanx for in-puts but they do leave me somwhat discourged.
Everyone wants more power but to be honest stock would be just fine with me. It's the Yo-Yo that get me and I was hoping that the aftermarket intake, or exhaust would help - it seems that they will not help.
Way back when I owned a modified Fiat, it had the same Yo-Yo effect and as I recall each go fast mod made it worst. Some expert on 124's found the problem to be related to the throttle linkage, and soft chassis springs. Some sort of rocking motion was created and he suggested running (olden days) cable to the carbs, to make a long story short it fixed the problem.
In the case of the Mini - well they are not the same for as many people have written before they belive it is related to the ECU and or some valve related to the ECU ..I tend to belive the same.
Does anyone have the Yo-Yo on the WORKS modified cars?
I don't think the boss at home will allow me buy the Works Kit, I was just wondering if that upgrade got rid of the Yo-Yo. If it does then ....... well, then, just goin to have to think about it. I will follow the various threads on subject of the Yo-Yo and find out if v38 mod will fix the problem. Sort of suspect it will only fix the problem for a period of time and then re-appear again. But, if everyone is happy with the mod then I will for sure follow suit. Little problem here though, I live 8 hours from the nearest dealer.
I'm with MINI USA. CD 38 is now available at your authorized MINI dealer and will address the yo-yo issue. If you'd like us to contact your dealer on your behalf, please phone us at 866 ASK.MINI and mention Reference # 200419100406 so we can help you more efficiently.
I just spoke with someone at ASK-MINI, and gave him the reference number. He said that the delay is due essentiall to what I call "personnel issues." He said that the software is not simply released via computer and the dealerships just install. Rather, he said that a representative personally visits the dealership to give them the software and show them how to install it, to make sure it is done "right the first time."
This is not consistent with what I've heard (it being just a download), but if true, it would explain why the software seems to be trickling through to the various dealers.
I have a question. I was at a light yesterday and the car was just sitting there idling. All of a sudden, the car just started to studder. It dropped a little on the rpms and sounded like it was going to stall. It has happened 3 times in the last 2 days. The car is only 5 days and 600 miles old. Has anyone else experienced this problem/know why/what it is?
Yes I've experienced that (it's alarming, b/c you do NOT want to stall at a light! How embarrassing!), but no, I don't know what causes it. I use premium gas, and I assume it's decent stuff (Chevron or Texaco).
When it does happen, I put it in neutral and rev the gas pedal a little... hasn't actually stalled so far. I also turn the A/C fan down if it starts doing this.
