Practical help with some options/pkgs

Hi all,

i just joined this great forum. very helpful info. I'm planning to get a Mini soon, and with the budget that i have, i can either get the MC with several options/pkgs or the MCS with only few of those. But after going for a road test a couple of days ago, i was just hooked on the MCS ... So now the question is what options should i get with it. I know this is a personal preference, but sometimes an option that looks really cool at the dealer might not be that practical/useful/etc.. later on - So i'd really appreciate your comments/thoughts on the following:

- Automatic Climate Control: Is anyone using it ? Is it worth the extra price or not really ?

- Glass Sunroof: That looks like fun, but how practical is it ? what about road noise etc... do you find yourself opening/tilting a lot ?

- All Weather Visibility Package: All of you living in cold countries, what do you think ?

- On-Board Computer?

Thanks for your help.

S.

If I were in your situation, looking to buy from new I would personally see what could be installed after the car has been made. For instance the OBC can be retrofitted, you do need an additional stalk if I have read other forum posts rightly, but it can be done.

Chilli pack is a good package, also if you ever want to sell your car people look for this as a must have option.

I love my multi function steering wheel, really I couldnt live without it, cruise control comes with it too. I spent too much time in my other cars changing the station and not paying 100% attention to the road. Before I looked at the road and felt my way to the controls on the HU, now I just know where they are !

Continuing with the audio theme of things, I wouldnt bother with HK, it pretty much limits you to the mini headunit which is in my opinion is poor, and has an enormous price tag. You can of course use circuits created by gbmini and sold also by mikeythemini to use aftermarket head units though. Also you can get better sound by installing aftermarket equipment, and this you can do after you have bought the car...

I have manual air con, there arent many days in England, especially this year that require you to use the air con, and is in my opinion an added expense but I cant really talk about this feature much as I havent been in the situation where it is needed.

When I was looking for a mini, I really liked the idea of a sunroof, although when you get in one you have loads of head room anyway, I would like one, but can do without the extra 65lbs weighing me down !

The OBC is useful but I could live without it, I only really look to see what my range is and the temperature outside.

Chrome line interior option, looks very nice but the parts are available from the mini parts department, you will spend a little more equiping a facelift mini though than the factory option due to the tach bezel price including a new tach !

Hopefully that gives you a little insight, I have tried to be fair an unbiased

My thoughts-
Auto CC - No Way - I like to turn up/down Heat and AC to the level I like. I've used it in a 325 and DO NOT LIKE IT - I don't have it in the MINI.

Sunroof - This is great. So far, I have had it open every time I drive in the city.

All-Weather Visability - I think this is a different Package in Canada than the US. My wife wanted heated seats, so we got the cold weather package here (heated seata, mirrors, washer jets) My choice would have been no - but then again Seattle is not Yellowknife (OK I'm sure you aren't there - but I don't know where you are).

OBC - no use/interest to me.

Well....

I pretty Much agree with the others the auto AC is pointless for the extra cost and i have heard people on here complaining about it not working properly!!

As far as I am concerned the sunroof is now more than ever a must as you can now get custom decals to go over the sunroofs which mean I can get both!

OBC is always a good idea in any car!!

PEACE

Thanks for all that replied ... (btw lespurgeon i'm in Ottawa - not that bad )

Now I'm leaning towards getting only the Premium Package (in Canada it includes: Glass Sunroof, Heated Seats, Multi-Function Steering Wheel w/Cruise Control)... and probably one or two other options...

Assuming the Canadian packages are as the U.S. (Sport, etc.) rather than as Europe (Chili, etc.), I'd recommend getting only the Sport pack. I don't miss any of the stuff that comes with the other packs. I also have leather seats, and like them very much, but could easily have done without. I wanted my car to be as simple and light as possible, so skipped all of the convenience and "luxury" options.

here in canada you will probably need heated seat! tho i never find it that bad in the car

if you are not planning to drive this car on track and autox then get the sports package... the 17s are beautiful to have and dsc is invaluable... i dont have it and don't really miss it on track... foglights are utterly useless here too

if i can recommend 3 things.. is mfsw and trip computer and sports package... sunroof is nice... but too heavy,
