Hey S people,

I've had 2 weeks with my S now, and have noticed my average mpg is far better than what I was getting from my old Cooper, and the engine isn't even run in yet ( only 250miles to go ). I'ts not been less than 35mpg and I'm certainly not going easy on it, I've even had it round Brands Hatch and over the 4500rpm rule! (naughty!)

I'm thinking it could well be the addition of 6th gear, anyone else have any thoughts/experiences on this?

i second that, dont trust your OCB, work it out from your odometer.

first trip i got 180miles to the tank driving sensibly
in the first few months of my S. i was getting 200-210 maximum.
after 10k its gained a few more miles 220ish max
after 20k im now easily gaining 260-275miles to a tank. 90% of my driving is motorway and i dont daudle. the ECU learns your driving style...

MPG gets much better with time.

Just had to fill mine up for the first time last week and she had done 260 miles, only driving around town.

Could it be the modifications to the engine.

What have other people got out of there first tank?

I have an '03 MCS(all stock) I bought used 1 month ago and I've gotten no better than 19.5 MPG in mixed city/highway commuting and some back road carving. And you get 34.5?
I'm in Texas and run the A/C 100% of the time; that couldn't be the difference could it?

I have 1000 miles on my 05 MCS and I am averaging 25.2 mpg. It seems kinda low since the sticker says 25 city/29 highway.

I think you Americans are definetly getting less fuel economy for a few reasons like the weather is warmer over in the US of A, and probably due to the fact that you guys do more town/city driving than me, as 95% of my driving is done at 70mph on the motorway.
Still, as people have already said, the OBC is not to be trusted, even though I did get 400 miles out of a tank of fuel!
I think I need to start driving more aggressively!

United-States Don't Forget US vs Imperial Gallons...

Any discussion of mpg needs to recognize that we Americans have puny little "gallons" compared to the "gallons" of fuel our British cousins receive at the pump. We US'ers may have heavier feet, but more likely, our worse mileage stems largely from this factor. The Imperial gallon is 20% larger than the US gallon.

Well pleased with the MPG in my S, the OBC displays about 33MPG, I think its reading about 1 or 2 MPG high, getting about 280-290 miles when the light comes on.

It is only slightly down on the Cooper that I had, and when you think of the extra power the S has then I am well pleased

I was getting around 40mpg during run in because I was doing a steady 70 on the M74/M6/M1 at trickle speeds. 24 months later it's more like 30 because I'm enjoying myself...

Hey Scottbhoy,I'm running in my MINI ONE and only getting 30 to the gallon...you must still be driving like an old granny.........i only jest..mine is cos 99.9% of my mileage is town driving and here in Telford its all rounabouts,so its blast upto the roundabout, quick dab on the brakes, back on power and off to the next one(not quite in my new one yet but give it a few miles). Its good having the OBC but it shows what i suspected. My old MINI ONE used to average about 30 mpg and this one is averaging between 30 and 31.I'm hoping that once its loosened up a bit i might get a tad more.

Haha, i aint no granny, just happen to have done a few motorway trips to see old friends in Bournemouth, cos Grannys dont redline their cars round Brands hatch with only 500 miles on the clock!

hey Nobby, do I detect a fellow Scot earning his crust in the big smoke? I'm actually doing the trip to Gods country 2moro, for a week of pampering at my parents.
M40/M42(W)/M6( blast it on the Toll Road! )/M74/A71 then relax! 399 miles door to door.

Hey-ho folks. 04 MCS... average overall since purchase is wavering around 30 mpg... and dropping, since I installed the Dinan intake. 6000rpm is strangely satisfying, and overcomes my practical side Still high 20's though.

Oh, and I'm at just over 8,000 miles.

Here are some of my gas mileage stats to date:

First fill-up 06/12/04
Last fill-up 09/20/04
Total gas to date 251.378 gallons
26 visits to the gas station averaging 9.668 gallons a visit.
Least gas put in 1.159 gallons (washed the car)
Most gas put in 12.368 gallons

Total miles at last fill-up 09/20/04 6931 miles
(and second oil and filter change)

6931/251.378 = 27.572 miles per gallon.

(nearly 50/50 city and highway driving)

I have a 2004 MCS
