The whinning to the steering is normal, not sure about the supercharger as iv never driven one! An aftermarket air filter would certainly give the engine some more grunt although it would probably be drowned out by the supercharger whine when ure booting it! Thats what iv gathered from people on here anyway! 2001 cooper (sold) ![]() 1995 Supra RZ-S TT auto in white.

Rattling Supercharger...mine too. The supercharger end of my 05MCS engine has been rattling for about a month and getting louder and louder. Today I brought it down the dealer-service to see if this was normal. Performance doesn't seem to have suffered so I waited until the problem was obvious. The mechanic booked me a replacement car for this afternoon and I'm bringing my car back to him. He's going to take the super charger apart to figure out where the noise is coming from. I'll report back the diagnosis later.

hmmm... I had this problem but was only apparant when I started the car up on a warm start after standing for 10 - 15 minutes. Sounding like a vibration from the supercharger area, wouldn't affect the performance, but was rather loud when you floored it. Got it booked in to the workshop, report was a power steering cooler fan?!?! I was rather dubious about that diagnosis, but went along with it.... day or so later it was fitted & the fault is now fixed!!! No problems now whatsoever Hope this helps... Dave

Mine is still in the shop. I took my MCS in yesterday afternoon and was given a replacement car (same colour too!). Sounds like my problem is a bit different than Bubblegoose's or Charliecroker's. My supercharger rattled even when the engine was idling. The mechanic said he's not seen (or heard) this problem before so is going to do some serious investigating. His preliminary find was the noise did not come from the pulley or tensioning pulley areas. Sounded more like it came out of the supercharger housing itself. Performance was not affected nor is there any oil leakage or anything that looks physically broken so we're all a bit baffled. I'm still waiting for a phone call on the diagnosis. Will report in again when we find out anything.

Picked up my car last night. The dealer mechanic says they put a new supercharger in. The old one worked fine and he couldn't figure out where the noise was coming from. It sounded like a bad bearing but the shaft spun just fine. So he replaced it and it's quiet again. He's baffled. He also told me this happened to one other car in Calgary (Alberta Canada). As I've actually only owned it six months, I'm hoping this isn't normal (the supercharger making rattling and grinding noises) for 2005 MCS'.

Nope. But I intend to drive it gently for awhile anyways. My sister-in-law's Mercedes supercharged engine REQUIRES a warm-up period when first starting the car up (about 30 seconds) before she should drive. That first 30 seconds is noticeable because it's fairly noisy (rattles). Then the engine quiets down. However, the new supercharger on my MCS doesn't make any noise at all when idling even when cold. My MCS and my SIL's Mercedes are the only supercharged cars I've had experience with. So I'm not sure if there should be any. A supercharger should be a fairly simple device. It doesn't spin anywhere near that of a turbocharger. I'm wondering if there was anything changed from the early build 05's. Mine was an early build. Also...on this webpage: http://ubercharger.com/page9.html I found this: Do you need to break in a supercharger? Answer: You do not need to break in a supercharger. When you break in parts, it's mainly because the parts need to seat into their existing place. With a supercharger, there are no internal parts that need to be seated, so no break in time is required. Last edited by beken; Jun 17th, 2005 at 05:51 PM.
