Smile WHOA! What Happened?

Over the weekend I decided it was time i changed the reverse light switch as my reverse lamp was deciding it didnt want to light up sometimes So anyways, changed the switch as I should with no problems, and I also disconnected the battery to be on the safe side while I carried out the work.

When I had put everything back together and reconnected the battery, started the engine and everything was fine, great But then as I looked....... the outside temp reading on the rev counter and the reading on my climate control knob had changed and now read in deg C rather than deg F

This is not a problem, i mich prefer it. But i read somewhere that they couldnt be changed unless I had the on board computer?

Dont know if this makes a difference but by accident, while I disconnected the battery I left the ignition on position 1. So when I came to connect up the battery I got a spark when i touched the positive cable on the terminal. This is when I realised I had left the ignition on so i turned it off and connected the battery back up.

Any ideas? As I say its not a problem, infact I like it, just puzzled

No idea what you done there mate, but UK spec cars should have both of these in 'C' rather than 'F' as standard!

All UK spec cars come with it in degrees C and AFAIK you can't change it. I suspect your BCU had got a little screwed before you got the car and that removing the battery has reset it.

It was acceptable in the 80's

Body Control Unit. The MINI hasn't got one computer it has a number of them ECU and BCU being the main two. The BCU is located behind the panels in the drivers side footwell (UK). Notorious for producing strange problems especially on earlier cars. Controls all internal switch gear and lighting systems.

I once had an issue where when I signalled left or right although the lights lit on the outside of the car I got no flashing like or ticking sound in the car. A few seconds after cancelling the signal the light on the dash would light and I got the clicking sound but the outside lights were not on. The same happened for the main beam too. Fix was to disconnect the battery to reset the MINI's computers (including the BCU). You can also do a software reset via the secret menu on the speedo.

Another BCU problem I had was the fuel guage registering empty and my mpg figures being blank on the OBC.

To be honest, I thought you could have BMW set your display to degrees F if that was what you preferred, just like some of the other comfort options.

Possibly although it isn't listed as a comfort feature in the manual. Certainly not user changable anyway.

If you've got climate control, press and hold the AUTO button for a few seconds, your display will change between degrees C and degrees F. The setting should 'stick'. This probably got reset to the factory default with the battery disconnected.

I'll have to try that and see if it works...
