United-States oil change countdown question

If you change your own oil and want to reset the oil change countdown readout to 15,000 miles (or whatever number of miles you want), can you do it without going to a dealer? I have a 2004 MINI Cooper.

I thought oil changes were included? Dealer said mine were.

The Service Interval Indicator is only supposed to be reset following the 10K Oil Service and Inspection 1 and 2 Services, and not for additonal oil changes between normal intervals.

BTW ... the 10K Oil Service also includes replacement of the microfilter and a brake pad check.

You only get free service for 3 years (I think). I'll check again with the dealer, but I'm getting pretty close to the end of all my free stuff. I just think it's nice to see the countdown to the next oil change. I think the dealer resets it every time it falls below 800 miles and you get an oil change, but $60 bucks for an oil change is crazy when I can do it myself for around $30.
