There may be other differences as well. As for one being better than the other, essentially they are the same design and they are made in the same factory. Why the versions fitted to Rover models seem to be trouble free is a mystery.

Hi,
Are the drive shaft sprocket, the drive pinion and the pin of the Mini Cooper gearbox the same of the Rover 200/400 gearbox?
Thanks

my gearbox is also broken

hi everyone ive got an 2003 36,000miles cooper and its currently off the road. it was making a grinding noise when i was driving which turned out to be the gearbox, it was something to do with the planet gears grinding together because of some bushes, anyway the gearbox is away to get fully refurbished which is costing me £450 + £253 labour for taking it out and putting it back in. BMW quoted me nearly £1400 which is way to expensive. they said they had never heard off any minis with geabox problems(lying ba***rds) i also phone mini HQ and they said they same, i asked if they were willing to do anything about it, they said the most that they could do was to take some money of the price of the gearbox, after i had paid £100 to BMW for them to inspect it thats if it was a fault not jus wear and tear. im not very happy bout the whole situation but i cant wait to get my car back. hopefully i wont be disappointed.

Bad luck, Justgot1 - I hope you can get it fixed! But have you considered trying to find a used box from a breaker? That might be cheaper......

Gadavies,

Any luck with your legal pursuit? I just had the same conversation with Mini North America regarding the transmission in my wife's 2002 Mini and cannot believe they would not admit some fault after all the postings about the Midlands transmission failures. If you have any guidance for those in a similar situation, I would love to hear about it.

Thank you,

Matt

Unhappy

8. rover manual says to engage 1st and 5th gears to lock shafts and undo bolts. selector is different to rover box, but to achieve same the same thing on the mini box, pull lever outward and move towards diff side of case. this engages 1st. slip the disconnected synchro collar downward and presto. unstake nuts and they are actually easier to remove than i thought.

Good luck with your mini[/quote]

how tight do you need to tighten the nuts back up to when you are done?

Tried to undo mine and man are they tight. Stopped before i got them undone as i didnt want to break anything rushing the job and do abit more research.

Where other people able to undo the nuts with only locking the box by using 1st and 5th??

I already have had the end casing off. to get the middle casing off i assume you undo the input and output shaft nuts slide the gears off and then you can slide the middle off?

thanks

Hi. I have a 2002 Cooper which is in the dealership having a new gearbox and (on their advise) clutch fitted. It does appear as this problem is wider than BMW themselves would like to admit. To make things worse, a few weeks prior to my gearbox going, my power steering pump failed. This cost £500 to be replaced, and I am still in discussion with them about it. Hope this helps.

Hi. I too have experienced problems with my 2002 Cooper. It's having a new gearbox fitted at the moment, plus (on their recommendation) a new clutch too! This is to cut down on any additional labour costs later on. A good idea i guess, but will probably land me with a whopper of a bill to pay now! Having read numerous other comments on here relating to the same problem, it would appear as if there is a wider problem than BMW would like to admit. To make thing worse, a few weeks prior to this, the power steering pump failed, landing me with a £500 bill. The BBC programme Watchdog covered this in some depth shortly after I had had it done. I hope this helps, Ian
