Airbag light

Hi everyone,

Our Mini cooper from 2002 airbag light has come on for no apparent reason. Does the indicator come on if the "life-expectancy" of the airbag approaches/exceeded? The connectors under the seats seem secure. I'd be grateful for some information you may have.
Many thanks.

There is no life expectancy warning although in theory some consider it about 10 years. You probably just need to do a reset, if there are any faults it will show when the error codes are read.

I had simlar issue, moved passenger seat forward and back, then 5 mins later the air bag came on....resolved as the seat bolster passenger side had slightly broke separating the bolster (passenger door side) from the main panel of the seat..the codes I deciphered were 10 and 06 using my air bag reset tool for clearing faults. however, it was only reset when the seat was stitched together....I reckon it registered the air bag had depolyed but had not...cos soon as this was fixed i managed to reset the air bag light..

check out ebay for the reset tool, i paid £20.00 better than BMW stating £500.00 plus for a new seat cover, air bag sensors, and then to reset the air bag light...the mark I's do have a moment for showing the air bag light due to static or tight wiring loom (skimping on wire) to the the connector when moving the passenger seat, these get pulled and register a false air bag deployment..

Good luck

Here in the U.S. there was an extended warranty offered on cars with build dates through 01/2003. Won't cover you, of course, but it might explain what is going on since they rolled off of the same assembly line. What happened is that there was a batch of defective or improperly crimped electrical connectors. The fix here in the states is to jumper some wires around the bad crimps, as far as I can tell from looking at my warranty repair. I'll post a picture if you think it might be helpful.
