Burn smell from new exhaust

Hi,

Need some help please. Just had a OE Mini exhaust (backbox) fitted. It was smelling as if something was burning (like burnt electrical wires). The mechanic also mentioned about a slight leak of coolant from radiator. What does a coolant leak into the engine itself smell like? I don't see the usual "mayonnaise" anywhere - should occur?
Many thanks.

New exhaust parts are painted to help stop corrosion I assume and it is this coating that burns off when new. Both or our new minis smelt of burning for the first 500 miles or so.

Hot coolant smells different from new exhaust smell. An engine can loose coolant from external pipes, coolant tank or anywhere else in the system. If an engine looses coolant internally it can mix with engine oil and can form as a maio cream like substance in the coolant tank.

MrLoz. Thanks for that. No mayonnaise anywhere so no coolant leak into engine. So the burning smell is normal then. I thought I had seized calipers but when this happens the pads wear quickly and the disc feels really hot which it did not have so I am a little relieved on one hand but I now have to address the leaking radiator.....

A new exhaust will smell like heck initially when it gets hot, and some areas of the system actually glow red under hard driving at the engine end so thats how hot it gets.
What you can smell is any protective oil and the surface paint burning off, its normal.

Thanks for the confirmation. Never had this in other cars so quite surprised as you could imagine as it is an awful smell.
