Battery drain problem

Hi All,

Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere in a thread but i couldn't find anything. I have a 2006 1st gen Cooper and have an ongoing battery problem. I've had the car about 2 months and have been plagued with flat battery problems. The battery kept going flat despite being driven regularly. We had a battery test at Kwik fit and they said the battery was fine so i just gave it a full charge on a charge and it seemed fine. Then about 2 weeks ago, after driving the previous day for about 90miles, the battery was totally flat. I phoned the AA and they sent a battery assist van who said the battery needed changing so i shelled out 100 for a new battery. Then after 2 weeks the battery was flat again. So something is draining the battery although all the systems seem to be ignition live. The only thing i can think of that is causing the problem is the Bury 9060 handfree kit, but would that drain the battery in 12 hours?

Any ideas?

Thnaks

Is everything on the car standard? How about the head unit or after market amp?

Battery Problems

When you had the battery changed by the AA did they do a complete check on the charging circuit of your electrics?

You know the battery is good, but do you know that it is being correctly charged when you are driving it?

I have had problems like this in the past (not on a new MINI though) and it is more likely to be a problem with the alternator charging, or earth lead issues than something draining the power this quickly.

However, I have come across alarms and CD changer units draining power quicker than they should....but this is usually down to an inadequate battery being fitted to the car.

I had this problem recently where if I hadnt run the car for 4 days then battery would be flat.
I also swapped for new battery to no avail.
Turned out mine was a fault with the HK amp - but could be anything

Here's how you find out ....

You 1st need a multimeter which can read current of at least 10 Amps
Such as >> This This
If not autoranging, Set meter to the 10A scale, get in car, turn ignition off.
Then 1 by 1, remove each fuse in turn & put probes across each set of revealed terminals.
Some will normally have a small current, such as alarm system & elect windows surprisingly, of say up to 200ma {1/5 amp}.
But you've got to look at those, say above 500ma, on circuits that should'nt have power with ignition off.
Hopefully this will give you some idea of the circuit that is causing the drain that you can investigate in more depth.
