Is the car key original key? If it hasn't been driven for a while, it's likely that the key is totally out of battery. From what my mechanic told me, the key's battery charges from being in the ignition.

If the key hasn't been used for a couple of years, you should try getting a new key. (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong).

A new car is pretty expensive because BMW needs to programme it to suit your car. I paid AUD500+ for a new key when it died. Mind you, it isn't as expensive as getting a new car.

Good luck!

thanks for the reply but the key works the central locking fine and lights up the instrument panel so if it was the key wouldn't those items not work then ?

The battery in the '04 key is user replaceable- it is a CR2032. But its only function is to run the remote for the central locking system. It sounds like your immobilizer isn't recognizing the EWS chip that is inside the key.

Try this: Car battery connected, door open, put your key in the ignition but don't turn it at all. If you hear a "ding" the immobilizer has recognized the EWS chip in the key and will allow 12v+ to flow to the starter motor and ignition. If not, that's the first thing that needs to be looked at. It is possible but highly unlikely that the EWS chip has been removed from the key. I don't know why somebody would do that. If you want to open up your key and look it is a somewhat rectangular shaped thing held in the key shell with a small plastic tab. I have a thread on here somewhere that shows pictures of an opened key you can compare it to. If your immobilizer/EWS system isn't working, it might be time for a trip to a dealer, or to call around to an independent MINI shop. They are highly complex systems.
