Did the CVT improve on later cars?

Hi guys Im a new guy here from Ireland, Im more so involved with VWs and audis rather than minis but have always hankered for a cooper S. Anyway putting that aside we are looking for an automatic cooper for my girlfriend, Obviously if the budget was there she would get a r56 but unfortunately its not. We have been keeping an eye out for 05 or thereabouts coopers. The ones with the paddles behind the steering wheel. Are these any different to the early cvts with no shifters? or any more reliable?

Thanks all.

MINI dropped the CVT in 2005 I believe. After that they used a regular automatic transmission. I don't think the Cooper S ever had the CVT, there was no automatic version of the S until they switched to the traditional automatic. My understanding is that the automatics were a lot more durable than the more fragile CVTs.

The CVT unit was used for all 1st Gen non-MCS automatic models. An Aisin unit was used for all 1st Gen MCS and 2nd Gen.

Thanks for that info, Did they use the same box throughout the r50s life or did the later ones see any improved cvt box? Surely they ironed out any issues buy the 05 or 06 models for example?

I don't think the CVT got much better in later models, some have lasted well but there is a high risk of problems now as age and mileage build up, they are all out of BMW warranty in UK and few independent garages know how to fix them, main dealer repair costs would write off most.....not a Mini to buy now without a 'cast iron' warranty included and full service history with low mileage.

I'm still driving a MINI with a CVT, but I wouldn't recommend buying one at this point. it's too likely to fail somewhere along the way and the cost of replacement (which is pretty much the only option) is very high.
