Misfire symptoms - but not a misfire!

My girlfriend has an '02 plate Mini Cooper which for the past two months or so has developed what has all the hallmarks of a misfire: hesitant under load, no power under about 3000 rpm until it eventually seems to catch and then pulls strongly, engine 'flutters' occasionally when driving at a constant speed etc.

So based on that she had the spark plugs replaced, no change. She had the coil packs replaced, no change. Plugging it into diagnostics has revealed no fault codes, so at the moment we're all stumped - including the garage!

Is this a common problem? At the moment I'm fearing all sorts: faulty injector, compression problems or god knows what! Can anyone shed any light?

It seems to be an intermittent problem too, sometimes it's terrible but other times the car drives absolutely fine and trouble free! It also seems worse when going uphill: whether this indicates a fuel supply problem or is just a symptom of it being under load I don't know....

All help greatfully received!

Hi ya

Get the fuel pressure and flow checked you may find if the fuel filter has never been replaced and it is on it's last legs. my one was bad when I changed it. Get the kit from mini don't use aftermarket one.

This is a how to guide

http://www.northamericanmotoring.com...hange-mcs.html

Also drive the car driven with the diagnostic machine connected and check out the map sensor, O2 sensor and knock sensor checked and do a diagnostic snap shot as you drive it. Then you will be able to narrow it down

Also Check you vacum pipe to your fuel pressure regulator

You may have a bad sensor or injector that is not 100% correct but not throwing a code.

Get a leak down check carried out that will tell you if you have a bad valve or rings, it's quite quick and easy to do.

Hope this helps

02 cooper HELPPPPPPPP

My mum has a cooper for 7 years and have spent a fortune on it, the car has started to display a amber engine warning light and it looks like a one of the fuel injectors is playing up. She's Tempted to sell too we buy any car for 1800 quid but want to advise if its a costly job or not. we love the car but its only done 6000 in the last years 7 years, which works out to be a very expensive car to run , any advise will be great. My mum lives in NW9 London.
