DIY Cooper 5spd getrag gbx diff bearings?

Hi all,

I've done loads of searching but can only find info on Midlands boxes...

My 2005 Cooper Convertible with getrag 5speed makes a whine from the gearbox/diff that is only getting worse with mileage (which is all around town stuff really).

I've checked a few things; but basically the driveshaft has too much play up/down inside the diff. There doesn't appear to be any oil leak from the diff.

Is this the diff output bearings? If so, are they quite straight forward to replace on a 5speed getrag? The main reason I ask is as the cost of a midlands refurbished/second hand box is quite a lot cheaper than a getrag :-(

A better case would be that it's possible the driveshaft splines have worn (if this is possible??)?

Any help or advise at this stage is welcome before I either fork out for a new gbox or have to pay for a gearbox change! Thanks!

If no luck here try NAM Mini forum in USA, as you say far more info on Rover Midland box than Getrag......I guess because far less problems reported:
