Passenger seat airbag problem

Hi,

I've got an R50 Cooper and the passenger seat airbag went off. The side panel of the seat has come away really clean and we want to change the airbag rather than buy a whole new seat.

Can anyone tell me what kind of problems we might have and how easy or difficult this would be please?

Thanks

Fairly straight forward to remove and fit replacement airbag, (side seat re-stiching may need a specialist or new/secondhand cover?) link below on How to: take apart 1st gen Mini front seats:

Disconnect battery while working on airbags and don't switch on ignition with wires disconnected or airbag warning light will come on and need to be re-set.

Thanks so much, that's really helpfull

It's put my mind at ease now that we won't have to buy a new seat. Apart from the panel coming away the seat is immaculate and it'd be a shame to change it.

But I dont think? you can just stitch up a blown airbag seam on a seat with mums sewing machine and cross stitch, it has to be done so as per the makers spec so it will come apart next time the airbag was needed in the correct way and not be sewn up as to be bombproof? hence the specialist.

I'm not going to try stitching it myself, I've got a list of local car upholsterers ready to ring tomorrow morning. If I'm not happy after talking to them I'll have to search out a new seat or cover for it.
