So I have saved up £5000 and set my sights on a Mini Cooper convertible in purple, an 06 plate. After reading through the forums, I have a couple of questions I was hoping someone could answer?
- is it possible to replace the inbuilt sat nav in the older models with a newer inbuilt sat nav, as I have heard the old ones aren't very good, but I would love an inbuilt one?
-do the convertibles leak very badly? What should I look for when viewing cars?
-any faults etc in these models that I should specifically look for?
I believe the 06 has the best inbuilt satnav for the first gen minis. By upgrade do you mean to the 2nd gen sat nav or just updating to the latest maps/firmware. Swapping to the second gen satnav is impossible, but you can probably get an upto date map and firmware DVD from a deal, but they won't be cheap.
I don't have much experience of convertibles but in general check the oil and look for leaks. Ask when it last had oil and see if it is looking low. Gen 1st tend to use a bit of oil once they get old and I found this to be the stem seals on mine. Check for a knocking from the gearbox that goes away when the clutch is pressed, this isn't terminal but is most likely a worn flywheel or thrust bearing which will need changing at done point and isn't cheap.
i did mean swapping to the second gen sat nav, as i've heard the first gen aren't very good, what do you think?
thank you for all the help otherwise, am i just best off taking my mechanic friend with me to check for that stuff?
