Transmission problem. Lower gears hesitation?

I've been reading heaps and heaps of posts on here trying to find a cause/solution to the problem I've been having. I bought a 1st generation cooper r50 second hand about a week ago now and have just started noticing this problem. As I'm slowing down the car seems to be hesitating a lot almost as if it is in a lower gear than it should be, which doesn't make any sense as it's an automatic, and when I come to a stop it shudders a little. Taking off there seems to be a distinct lack of power. Also driving slowly in traffic the hesitation is there and when parking the same problem happens. Can anybody help me with this? It's concerning as I've only had the car a week. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
