Unhappy Getrag gearbox Help

Hi all,
Mini newbie, be gentle. I recently picked up a late 55 plate Mini Cooper for my wife at a pretty reasonable price. It's a great little car and she loves it. The only problem is it has a sort of whirring noise when you drive it. It sounds very much like a wheel bearing, but it completely disappears when you press the clutch or take it out of gear and coast. I've been told it's probably the output shaft bearing and the garage I took it to said I'd be better off changing the box than rebuilding the old one due to the labour costs involved. Now here is my big question I can get a Getrag 6 speed from a 2003 cooper s at a reasonable price. What I need to know is, as the car already has a Getrag 5 speed is the 6 speed a direct replacement or like the midland conversion are there loads of other parts that need to be change too. (Selector box and linkage aside)

Thumbs up reasonable

I just switched from midland 5, to a 6-speed Getrag. Best choice I have ever made. Either way you could take this opportunity and also pull the dual mass flywheel out and replace with a valeo full kit available on amazon or ebay or other various areas of the intraweb. minisport2.com/mini-parts/Gearbox is a good place to start as for the gearbox styles.

Then again

It could be something much simpler like getting a new guide tube and throw out bearing.

Hi, yer I heard changing from a midland box to the Getrag 6 is a no brainer. Midland box is great if your looking for a replacement anchor!!!! Don't think it's the Throw out bearing as it doesn't make any noise sitting still at idle. Only hear the noise while driving.

I hear ya back

This is a true statement however while in idle or setting in nuetral there is no load pressure on the clutch and flywheel meaning nothing really moving about, when in gear loads of pressure and torque would show any imperfection to the alignment of the clutch assembly. This was happening right before mine went capute.

Yer I'm thinking 6 speed is the way to go. But I really need to know if the Getrag 5 to Getrag 6 is a straight swap or do I need to change the drive shafts, slave cylinder ete, ete......I'm doing the job myself as we are not exactly flush at the moment.

Ok so up date on the gearbox conversion. After much research online and getting the old man on the case too, we contacted John Tee at Minigearboxes.co.uk who although being on spring break kindly gave us a parts list for the conversion. It turns out it is not a straight one in one out swap (no such luck) but it's not as complicated as the Midland to Getrag switch. The parts you need, for anyone that's interested are as follows.

2X Drive shafts
Transmission mounting
Flywheel & Clutch
Control cables & Selector box
KN air filter

So next step sourcing parts.
