Traction Control

Hi, i've already searched for this but found nothing so...

Is it possible to turn off the traction control on a cooper??

Is traction control the same as this DSC which i keep hearing about, if there is any difference what are they. i see it costs a fair few bob aswell, really not sure if its worth it whatever it is .

Two stability and traction control systems are offered (ASC+T and DSC), with only one (DSC) being available on the Cooper (at least here in the US).

I suggest you ...

FAQ: What do ABS, ASC, CBC, DSC and EBD mean?

ALL forum titles for dsc worth showing threads

I couldn't find this in an FAQ here, but I thought I remembered seeing something on the MINIusa site.

At least in the US, automatic traction control (inexplicably All Season traction Control rather than ATC) is standard for the S (hardtop and convertible) (I'm looking at my 2005 spec sheet -- things may have changed in 2006 and almost certainly are different in different countries).

DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) is an option for either Mini Cooper or Mini Cooper S. DSC includes automatic traction control.

The 2005 owner's manual has nearly identical descriptions, but says ASC works by reducing engine power or apply brakes to the front wheels, while DSC works by reducing RPMS or applying brakes to individual wheels -- presumably rears as well as front. Both of these can be thought of as anti-lock brakes on steroids. Using the ABS system for traction control is becoming more common even on SUVs since it will work even with open differentials. It does require a more complex ABS system though with individual sensors on each wheel, and individual control of the brakes for each wheel.

You can disable ASC using the toggle switch, just as you would for DSC. But it's all or nothing -- if you have DSC you can't switch to an ASC only mode.

So reading from your description ASC and DSC does pretty much the same jobs?

Does anything come standard on the cooper, if not how much are they in the UK, would really like that DSC thing but ive got so much stuff to buy before uni im not sure if i should go for it.

For people with it, do you think it is worth it?

Another thing, if i dont decide to have it put on the car can i go back and have it 'put on' later on?

DSC is an expansion of ABS and ASC+T ... did you read the FAQ?

According to the MINI UK configurator ASC+T and DSC are available on the Cooper as £100 and £320 options.

I found a half dozen "Is DSC worth it?" threads using the search criteria I posted in my previous thread

Ah thanks mate, ive just been on uk mini site aswell and found out it only costs £100. But im still not entirely sure of what it is. what im after is something like...on my mates civic he has a switch which can turn off the traction control and itll snake its way all the way up the road if you floor it. if i get this DSC thing and turn it off surely that will mean im back where i started with a standard cooper dont it , im after something to turn off the traction completly.

If you "toggle off" either the ASC+T or DSC you will have NO stability or traction control.

if you don't buy it you don't have it to turn off, its like if you don't buy a kettle then you have not got a kettle to worry about if its on or off

But is there any point getting it if you're only going to buy it to turn it off?
