Yellow Cooper Sill Plate help needed badly

Hi All
I need help.

The sill plates in my MINI of 4 years are starting to peal. There appears to be a plastic coating on them which is coming off.

Is this coating meant to be on there or should have been removed years ago.

I need to solve this today as tonight i will buy new ones at a price of £27

what do you think.

After putting a body-kit on my car i bought new sill plates which had a protective plastic on the top, so i would suggest peeling the plastic off to see what they look like.

protective coating

As far as i am aware the coating just gives a bit of protection. it will not hurt to remove it. If small scratches appear car polish will work ok.

I have peeled them off a bit and i think after a clean they will look ok. The bit with the plastic on does feel plasticy (surprisingly) and the other bit feels like metal.

But i do know that often metal parts have a plastic cover to stop corrosion.

If you were going to put new sills on the double sided tape they use is surprisingly strong, so if you take your old ones off be extremely careful!!

The short answer is it should of been removed years ago. It's just the plastic protective layer they put on to stop the metal getting scratched in transit.

Had you removed it before you would have noticed that the finish is shinier with the plastic removed.

Take it off and use a decent metal polish to bring them up as good as new. I recommend Meguiars Metal Polysh (their spelling not mine). Available from most Halfrauds stores.

It was acceptable in the 80's
