Spotlights

I'm thinking of fitting 2 spotlights to the front of my car, but only if I put the aero grill back on there (currently debating!!).

But, I'd want the spots to act as the full beam, so just on when I flash and when fullbeam is on. However, I'd want them to be on on their own, for full effect...so I'd be wanting to take the fullbeam bulbs out of the main lights.

So my questions are:-

1. Is it legal to remove the fullbeam bulbs and just use the spots for this.

2. Will the spots be bright enough to replace the fullbeams for flashing?

Am I right in thinking the standard BMW spotlights are set up to come on with the main (xenon) beams (automatically if you have auto headlights), and ALSO when you flash/put fullbeam on?

AFAIK, by default the spots only come on with your full beam.

Answer:

1) No. Your headlamps must have bulbs (working) in them
2) Same wattage (about 55w, I think)

Whatabout "off-road" spec bulbs for the spots?
Far brighter than "normal" and you're only gonna use 'em occasionally aren't you?

Thanks Widgey...

The main reason I don't want the spots on with the main lights is because they won't match the colour of the Xenons...and also I'd like the novelty of a "flash" just coming from the spotlights only.

Looks like my only choice is to have the spots on with the fullbeams at the same time then, legall (and insurance-wise)

Flash is better with nice bright globes in both headlight cluster and spotties.

Also, change the headlight high beam bulb so that its a bit brighter

Spotties won't be on unless your main beam is on, which won't be that often, so who cares if it matches Xenon or not, as if anyone would be seeing it from the front you'd turn them off anyway .

On the same subject, I recently purchased 2 spots and brackets along with a wiring kit off of eBay.

The instructions, I think trying to remember, say to tap into a Yellow and blue cable on the drivers side headlamp, but I can't locate that. There is a Yellow and Green (I think. It was a couple of weeks ago when I took a look and gave up).

Anyone done this before? They're not the official BMW version that need activating.

Cheers
Neil
