Ok, so I have a 2002 mini. The reverse lights stopped working. I have checked the normal things...ie fuse box under steering wheel and the bulbs, but I cant seem to figure it out. Anything I should should check...tips, clues, suggestions?
The most common problem on any car including the Mini is wear on the switch that
goes into the gearbox. If you are under w/tee that should be covered. Page 230-5 in
the Bentley manual if doing it yourself. If replacing the switch doesn't do it you'll need
to use a multimeter and check each stage of the wiring .
Some people are like a Slinky ........ not really good for anything, but you still can't help
but smile when you shove them down the stairs
I had the same problem my reverse light wasnt coming on. Mine was an 04 mini One. Strangely i was just about to take it to the garage and it started working again.
Does anyone know where I can get this part (backup switch)? Can I just go to like an Autozone type place or should I order the part online? I have sort of looked around and not had much luck.
MINI are your best bet. Unlikely anywhere else would stock this part. Just quote the part number to your local dealer over the phone and they should be able to give you a price. In the UK at least the parts are pretty cheap compared to other makes.
I have another question that is a little wierd. When you put the car in reverse (5 speed manual)
which lights come on? The little 1 in the middle on the lower bumper? or are there 2 in the back? Thanks, I cant remember now.
On a 2002 MINI it's the lamp in the centre of the bumper. The face lift models (July 2004 onwards) have the reverse lights in the rear lamps and a foglight in the centre of the bumper.
Hi Cally - we traced the same problem in my 2002 mini one to the bulb holder in the reversing bulb assembly - it only cost about equivelant of $4 for a replacement from the local MINI/BMW dealership but took 5 weeks to get in from Germany. Just a pain to get to to replace it.
way to check it is take off the spare wheel tray (4 screws) then take the bulb holder from the connector and use a circuit tester to check if their is a current when the car is put into reverse at ignition II.
Ok, so I am still working on the electrical issue I am having with the reverse lights, but I had another curious question. When I press the unlock button on the key chain to unlock the car with the remote NO lights come on except the interior. Is that normal? When I press the lock button on the remote other rear exterior lights blink. I am wondering if I am having other issues here and I want to check them as a whole.
Dell...thats the same as mine - get confirmtion of locking the car by one flash of indicators and side repeators and confirmation of unlock by all interior lighting coming of for 30 seconds or until the engine is started. This was the same on my mates 2003 cooper s also
So the saga continues. I have checked the circuit in the light and socket itself and all is good so I am back to the back up switch. Previous post told me it is next to the gearbox...thanks for the link Root Ginger. I ordered the part and I have it. My mechanic friend that was going to put it in, no longer can help me...so I am on my own. Is the back-up switch somewhere that I can reach it? Is it in the engine area or under the vehicle? Can a normal non mechanic but handy person put in the new back up swtich?
