Phase 1 Xenons are only xenons on the low beam, Phase 2 is bixenons - One bulb, but both high and low beam !

This is NOT the case on the R50 / R53 / R52 models (pre R56)

On these, the phase one and two xenon lights are xenon on the low beam only. The main beam is a halogen bulb. The main difference (apart from the 2nd gen lamps being a bit brighter) was one of looks.

These pictures show the difference between the phase one lamps and the phase two ones.

Phase 1

Phase 2

On the R56 you are correct, the Xenons are Bi-Xenon.

Regards,

James.

Phase 2's are like gold dust and impossible to get hold of, phase 1's are also rare to find, but are from the earlier Mini's. Phase 2's are a little brighter, but not a huge amount. Phase 1's are still a massive improvement over halogens,

Can the early Xenon lights be directly swapped for the 2nd gen Xenon lights or do the fittings differ?

It cost approx £600 for the retrofit kit from prefacelift to facelift xenons (R53). Plus fitting... that was enough to put me off......
