Modified Halo Sidelights - Another Great job by Mikeythemini

I'd lost count of the number of side lights I've gone through trying to get the side light bulbs to match the xenons.

Problems with being to yellow or to blue, or even worse looking blue when turned off (those philips blue coated ones), or the LED's that flash and flicker which annoys me. I'm a picky bugger what can I say

Thought I'd got the perfect match with some Halogen side lights mikey provided me for my xenons. But alas when I changed to a facelifted cooper S with the newer xenons they weren't quite as close a match Then I went and changed my xenons to 6k bulbs. So back to LED I went.

Anyway the Halo side lights came out and I was like 'mint' i'm having those. Seemed to match by 6k xenons. Alas when I saw them in the flesh I was none to keen as it didn't look like a proper ring as there were 2 dark patchs. So I decided to stick with what I had.

Then one of the 6k xenon bulbs went so back to standard xenons, and ever since I've been making do with some Halford LEDs. Then a stone or something at some point cracked one of my side lights and its been bugging me eversince whether to buy another standard one or the not so perfect halo's.

Anyway when mikey showed off his new LED's for going inside the facelifted xenon lights I noticed his Halo's looked far better on his car. Turns out as the manufacturers were not wanting to put extra leds into the lights he did it himself and that the Halo's were now cheaper than ever (think they were close to £80 when they first came out) So an enquiry was placed.

Anyway I retured from holiday last week and needless to say I soon ordered some moffied halo's and I collected them yesterday.

Now Mikey warned me they would not look pretty at the back of the unit but I think he was being modest as they're not far off looking spot on at the back. In fact I'd go as far as to say I'd of not noticed anything wrong if he hadn't said something.

Anyway I spent half an hour yesterday taking off my bumper (sorry mikey I find 10 minutes to remove the bumper easier than worrying about droping stuff ) fitting them and replacing the bumper.

Now I already said I was a picky bugger, and I'm being honest in that i don't think they're 100% perfect (yet) but they're 1000% (thats not a typo) better than the unmodified ones. There aren't the 2 dark patchs at all now, but you can tell there are 4 brighter points.

Don't get me wrong I'm not complaining about this in the slightest. Mikeys job is brilliant and well worth the extra money and I'd highly recommend if your ordering these you order them from mikey and try and coerce him (with money) to modify yours to

However I'm looking at changing the LED's themselves now to get that extra little bit to make them perfect.

The LED's he fitted where super bright white ones and match my xenons perfectly, but there is only 1 led in each section pointing forwards. So I'm proposing to changine the LED@ to these...

501/194/T10 New Mini Light Tower 9 Leds Xenon White by Ultra Leds U.K

or

U50158W (501) White 8 Led Super Wide Angle Led Bulb by Ultra Leds U.K

Theyre only a couple of pound each, and I need to test to make sure they're not going to be to long to fit in the Halo units themselves. But with the extra LED's pointing sideways I'm expecting there to be no dark patchs at all

I'll try and post pictures when i get chance

So massive thanks for another great job from mikey. Been a while since I've needed used his services but still can't recommend the guy enough

Now I know I said I was picky, yes my car needs cleaning and my grill needs re-spraying but I'm working on it...

...anyway here are pics in the day light. Day lights ones are propbably best for showing you the 'worst' it will look.

Once I've got the other LED's in will post more pictures...

Excellent!!

I was actually thinking about this the other day, i love the colour of them but wanted them really bright and really white.

I already have the halo sidelights so my question is,

If i wanted too, could I put the bulbs that you used for yours into my sidelights without having to modify them? as in just put them in the two spaces already for the bulbs?

Thanks

If you mean the led's I've put a link to then don't see why not.

Or just get the leds I currently have off of mikey.

Or last option is once i've got the ones from my link fitted, I'll have 8 of mikeys spare.

So the bulbs you are using at the moment are the ones from Mikey?

They do look good.

Thanks

They're whatever mikey fitted yeah.

Although he did say that the standard halo lights now come with 2 different sets of bulbs as the original sets (that you still get) sometimes caused problems with MOT's so they also come with whiter ones.

Right ok no problem.

The normal ones that look blue never had problems with MOT from what I have heard. Nylo had her old DS s through MOT with them with no problems

Thanks Damo, I will look into it.

I know of only one person who had trouble and only going off what mikey said

I think it was just a few over zealous MOT'ers.

! so its the same in England as it is in Northern Ireland, if you get an MOT'er in a bad mood chances are you will fail.?

Infact the centre near me put their new staff on lane 6 and 7 i think, so if you get them you will more than likely fail.

Mikey, any chance you can make a "kit" available to mod existing halo installs?

Paul.

Get short screwdriver
Attach string to it
Reach down to old sidelight and remove 3 screws, carefully remove the light
Insert new light - taking care not to scratch the lens
fit 3 screws
the string is for retrieving the screwdriver when you drop it into the bumper

If you only want to change the two bulbs in the halo sidelights you can do it without taking the bumper off.

im going to do it one day, it looks good though
