Carrying a bike

This may have been dealt with before, but is it possible to carry a mountain bike safely inside the car ?
I,ve read Santa cruz's thread about the roof rack and all but I favour getting a tow bar mounted carrier when I can afford it.

depends how careful you are. Knowing how many scratchy, pointy, oily bits mountain bikes have on them i'd be very careful. There should be plenty of room with the wheels & saddle off, assuming you have quick releases.

The other alternative is one of those high rear carriers that works using straps - no tow bar required, but i'm not sure if it would foul the spoiler on a Cooper/S - does anyone know the answer to this as i already have one of these carriers which i've not been able to use for the last 2.5 years 'cos of the roof spoiler on my Fiesta Zetec-S?
