Bumper bash, MCS rear bumper destroyed - maybe opportunity to replace with aerokit?

My 04 MCS Electric Blue was rear-ended on Friday afternoon on the way back home (by one of my work colleagues!). The rear bumper is damaged beyond repair but luckily no damage to the attachment brackets, body or lights. The only items needing replacement is the bumper unit and the small trim piece on the left side. Now it got me thinking – should I maybe not consider putting the aero kit on? Strangely the standard bumper is 30% more expensive than the aero bumper. If I settle for the cost of a painted standard bumper and trim piece I can put down this money on an aero kit or portions thereof (also the aero one does not need the trim). I can do all the removal and installation work myself no problem and save on labour. Some thoughts:

1. I am not too crazy about the aero rear bumper (unless the decal mesh is modified by either drilling out the holes and painting the ‘mesh’ area black or making real mesh inserts). Then it looks good but is much work. Also afraid that the bumper may hide the JCW tips too much. Will not do the aero rear on its own, then it looks a bit odd
2. Side sills. Looks very nice but prone to damage/scuffing. I also am not keen on loosing the sill logo plates, so will either need the stock logo plates stuck on or get some JCW sill strips – extra costs.
3. Front bumper – now this one I really like! Considered a while back just doing the front.
So options are:
a. Stay with stock items
b. Do full kit (can save 41% of the total cost – all parts + painting). Even more because of doing fitment myself.
c. Do only front and rear – which should look nice and save money on sills.

Please share your thoughts on this.

Short answer: do the full kit

....plus with 40% off thats a pretty good saving !

Im getting mine fitted tommorow Aero rear bumper shows off more of your JCW tips btw. Sills look very cool so you've got to do those! Plus the sill strips are quite cheap really - Im going to try to reuse my old ones when fitting my kit but if not its only about £35-40 for a pair of new JCW sill strips...

Go for the aero kit!!

You've got to get the full kit BlueMax, with that kind of saving.

My (full) kit has had the Mini-Pirate treatment with carbon look vinyl inserts front & rear, looks good (imo) & just a little bit different to the usual inserts.

Cheers
John

Thanks guys it surely is tempting. Keano please post up pics especially some showing the JCW tips from above and the inside of the sills - I suspect you will not be able to use the existing sill strips but the JCW's are way cool. Have you done anything about an exhaust header yet? Hartge 210, EB just remains my favourite colour, 5 years on and still absolutely loving it. Like the carbon look inserts. I also love what Berthil has done to his rear bumper - drilled out the holes in the fake mesh (900 off!!), removed the decal and painted the areas black. If I do all this I will keep the existing front grille and put the chrome trim and slat in the aero bumper. Oh and BTW last month my windscreen got cracked and on my way to work this morning runflat light came on, right rear punctured! So now it totals 3 events.

They say bad luck comes in three's!

Id go with the full body kit aswell, I often see cars with partial kits on but in my opinion it makes them look unfinished.

I didnt like the leccy blue when I was looking for a mini but now I think they look awesome! Blue and black is just superb IMO - nice inserts too, Im looking to see about getting them too although Im not sure what exactly to do - I may get JCM front brake ducts instead of the front fogs and have seen some mesh grills for the rears which look quite smart.......

Will do. Ive got JCW sill strips at the moment so hopefully they will work but your probably right that new ones will be needed - my fingers are crossed!!!

No new header as yet - was very close to getting a RMW header a little while ago but that fell through, was also tempted by the Janspeed offer a little while ago but bought the Aero kit instead... Also came accross a full JCM exhaust system for sale too (exactly what Ive been after for ages!!!!) but didnt have the money because of the aero kit

Its a toss up between a Janspeed, JCM and minimania mani at the moment.... funds will dictate when though....

PS - go for the full aero kit !!

Thanks Keano, direct comparison photos will help. What sort of prices are JCM systems going for? That would definately be first preference, I do not think anyone in South Africa has it so it is probably not an option for me. Found too many threads on NAM about vibration problems and error codes with the RMW Shorty. You must be quite excited about your aero kit!! The JCW sill strips you have at the moment, are they fitted directly into the recesses of the existing sill?

No worries, will update the above post when I have them

The full JCM system is about £750+vat including sports cat IIRC...

Yeah I heard about a few issues with the RMW item too, part of the reason it fell through.......

Sill strips - yes basically. They are just stuck down so Im hoping that with some new double sided tape and care in taking them off/cleaning them up they could be put back on... we will soon see....

Well they have come off ok but apparently there isnt a suitable recess in the aero side sills to put them back on.... they are being left in the boot for me to have a bash with later... Anyone got a pic of the aero side sill to show if there is a recess or not?

Front and rear bumpers are now on but there is a part missing from the side sills so Im not getting my car till tommorow while the bits are delivered. Didnt realise the sills are a two piece jobbie with the second part used to fix to the car on the underside.... ???????

Must admit that I thought the tips at the rear were going to be protruding through the rear bumper a little more.... Still look pretty cool IMO - defo better with the full kit than S bumpers IMO

My old bumpers and skirts are now for sale - PM me if anyone is interested
