| The standard manual levelling feature is 'supposed' to be used dependant on how loaded up with passengers and luggage you are, to prevent other road users from getting dazzled if the front has raised up. There is a small thumbwheel on the right below the dash to set them usually 3 positions although hardly anyone (including myself) ever remembers to re-set them according to number of passengers, etc. You may sometimes see or hear the headlights motors moving them on start-up from the low parked position up to the thumbwheel switch setting position. However many early Mini's seem to have one or both motors stuck or failed in the down position giving very poor headlights! Often the best way to get around the problem without buying new headlights/motors is to disable the system and then get the headlights set at an MOT testers or a Garage with the right beam setting equipment and providing you don't load up the car to the maximum you shouldn't dazzle anyone. The annual MOT checks the beams are not too high to cause dazzle and set them via the small screw adjusters behind the lamps if necessary. If they are too low I don't think they have to do anything! I assume this is what the NewMinistuff headlights require to be done and will pass MOT, etc but maybe ask Mike for further advice, he is normally very helpful as well as being a keen and knowledgeable Mini enthusiast. The more powerful HID/Xenon type of headlights available are however a different case and to pass MOT have to have a much more complex automatic self-levelling system fitted with no manual switch settings possible for the driver and a powerful washer jet system for cleaning them. |

| Once again i must thank mab01uk for taking the time to help me, i am actually due to go for an mot in the next 2 weeks so i will double check, i did ask the gentleman at new mini stuff if these lights would pass an mot and he said yes so i see no reason to be concerned and i am sure he would have told me if anything was required, it was just incase i had to maybe swap a part over to the new headlights, oh and you are correct, i have never ever used that dial on any of the cars i have owned! and didn't even realise it was for load purposes! well we learn something new everyday! |
