monokote bonnet stripes

I was in my local hobby shop the other day and noticed these vinyl strips used for model aircraft designs.

http://www.monokote.com/trim.html

they come in a vast array of colors and are very cheap! $2.49 USD for 36 in. I may test some soon.

my questions are:
1. Are there any graphics people familiar with this product?

2. Has anyone else tried this?

I beleive monokote is a heat-shrinking vinyl. I'm pretty sure, but could be wrong. Vinyl sticky sheets are extremely inexpensive though, so your on the right track! Some colors may fade in the sun (I know certain red and yellow vinyl does).

But MINI charges $80 for $3 of vinyl... huummmmmm...

Check your local sign/automotive graphics place. A set of stripes for $15...? Give 'em some measurements and a few minutes later your set. Might be able to use water to apply (consult vinyl dealer: water would help you move for correct placement) squeegy out and its on there till you peel it off.

Yeah, I am just very hesitant to put any adhesive on my car. I do not want just big bumper stickers on my bonnet. So, I am trying to find affordable stripes that when peeled off only requrire a nice hand wash with soap and perhaps a wax (no polish) to get back to normal.

I decided against the factory stripes for this reason. I fear paint fade and then after 5 years or so the stripe begins to peel off.

Oh well, Am I just paranoid?

The self-adhesive MonoKote is NOT heat shrinking. It is extremely durable and I have never seen any signs of fading. It is very sticky but peels off without residue -- normally. I have never left it baking on a metal hood for 5 or 10 years so I don't know how the adhesive ages.

MonoKote is extremely glossy and smooth and will look far better than the usual dull orange-peel vinyl graphics -- at first. It scratches and dulls over time much like paint. The biggest issue you'll have is installation. MonoKote does not stretch or shrink to conform to compound curves and it sticks firmly immediately upon contact.

A local graphics shop should be able to slice off a couple of stripes pretty cheap. Otherwise order the factory jobs from Classic Mini in Ohio.

MonoKote is what I use to cover my RC planes and their website says its heat shrink material....

...MonoKote's superior shrink and adhesion... The only tools required to cover with MonoKote are: a Top Flite Heat Sealing Tool....

If you still want to try I would say test first.

Just a suggestion

There are two types of Monokote. so both are correct. The ones at the hobbie shop are most likly the shrink to fit, cause they are for Airplane bodies(ok i cant spell fusalodge). They also make Straight Graphics rolls too that dont shrink. That are a pain in the butt for the compound curves to put on. hope this helps
