I've actually seen one car with the tiniest black strip through the number you have ever seen. Like about a mm. Apparently this is perfectly legal!

Can someone please give a definitive ruling on this?

From what you say I think it is illegal from the point of view of race organisers but i am not convinced that it would be illegal in the eyes of the law. Can someone please clarify this?

[quote=elbee]7 is boring, but lucky.

You want boring?! I'll give ya boring.........I'm thinking of a big round white spot only, on which you would put a number, and leaving it at that. Boring maybe, vacant? maybe. But the idea is interesting to me.

Does anyone know the size of the original MC40 magnetic plates on the door?

I really want to have a number on my doors, and I think the size used on the MC40 is perfect...

Thanx in advance!

I was stopped by a police car after driving around for 6 months and reported for "promoting racing on the public highway". My kids thought it was very funny seeing as I was only doing 45 mph at the time in a 60! My protestations that I was doing nothing of the sort only resulted in them photographing the car as evidence.

The case went to Court where I was told that the Court took a dim view of people driving around in race clad cars, the chequered roof didn't help. Despite having no points on my DL, I was fined £500 and given 6 points. Thank heavens it was only a ONE. If it had had a JCW kitted Cooper I would probebly have been given a custodial sentence!

OK well you should have spotted the porky by now. One racing driver I know was once told this by a policeman whom he had annoyed for something or other. It also is written down in the regulations to do with Racing Licenses. You might have your license withdrawn if you drive your racing car on the public highway with the numbers still fitted. Some cars put a red "X" across the number to denote "not racing".

My number did not conform to official race number style of white background and black numbers. In over 2 1/2 years I never was asked about the number, and some passing police even commented what a good car it was. No mention of the number ever. I mentioned this racing number illegality thing to my father-in-law who is a circuit judge. He said that it would be a tough case to prove that you were "promoting racing" and viewed it as more of a case of self expression.

No doubt that it might get a mention if you were prosecuted for actually racing, but that is a different matter.

I've now had my number sticks on my MINI for nearly a month now and so far, no trouble yet. At the weekend, I was in a traffic jam in Guildford, and the copper in the police car next to me gave me a thumbs up (which I hope meant that my MINI looks okay!). I've past a few police cars in Surrey and so far, hardly any of them have given my car a second glance so fingers cross, I won't have to go through the crap that Apial went through above.

Actually, after reading what Apial went through above, it pretty much sums up the inconsistancies (sic) of our legal system. Compare the above case to this hit and run case -http://icsurreyonline.icnetwork.co.uk/0100news/sutton/tm_objectid=14081056&method=full&siteid=53340&head line=widow-slams-hit-run--justice--name_page.html
