Ticking Noise at Startup - MOD

I have a MOD with 6000 miles on the clock (Sep '04). I've just noticed some loud ticking noises at startup which disappear within about a mile of leaving home. The oil is very black and halway between the 2 dipstick marks. It sounds very much like hydraulic tappets that haven't adjusted.

Anyone else had the same issue in a MOD? I'm going to perform an oil top up to see if this makes a difference.

It pays to check the oil level regularly , I found that the diesel engine uses more than the petrol ( monitor the level each time you check it ) Put a pint in mine yest. Its a driving school car used mainly on urban routes.

Mine hardly uses any oil. Mine is always black, and any Diesel car's oil will be black, they run dirty, and thus shows that the oil is doing its job, although the colour is very scary!!
I haven't had the ticking, so can't help there, have you tried dealers?

I'm pretty certain it's either 'tappet' like noise or is the water pump expanding/contracting as the water starts to get warmer.....I think it started with the cold weather we've been having. Will be interesting to see if the warmer weather makes a difference (assuming we get some )

As an aside, cause there's no evidence of this noise after the first mile of travel, can diesels suffer from 'pinking' like petrol versions?

By the way it seems that the valves on the diesel are adjusted manually - no hydraulics

Have you tried a fill up with that special Shell Diesel? Supposedly contains agents that will clean your engine.

You have got the (nearly 2 years old now) hot start problem then Aston. They don't have a fix for this. Sound rough when they start don't they!! It will go away for the summer though Aston if that is any conciliation!
