Rev counter broken

I have posted about this before, but Id thought id try again and see if anyone has any new ideas regarding this.

Months ago now my rev counter stopped working its stuck just above 1000rpm. It has no digital readout at all. But at night it is illuminated. I am asking a MINI dealership to have a look into it, but they said it may involve taking dash apart. Should I just buy a new rev counter?

My Mini is a 51 plate btw.

Any help welcome!

Matt

Took my mini for an Inspection 2 service today, and oil change, which pretty much caned my bank balance.

I was then told I needed to have power steering rack fixed as its leaking, and the front wishbone brushes are apparently split, along with filler cap rubber is perished etc, anyway just the stuff that needs to be done tallys up to over £800. Which I think is madness!

Anyway back to the Rev counter, they discovered it was knackered, they tested another with it and it was fine. They quoted me £171 to have a new one fitted, so I think im going to get one and do it myself, surely it cant be that hard, I was told that it would take 15mins for a mechanic to do it.

I finally got round to buying a rev counter from a 2004 mini on ebay, was a bit worried it wasnt going to work as it has different software versions blah blah, but it works just fine. The only prob is that I dont have the right torx screwdriver, I managed to get them out but not in again, so Iv had to order a set. Very annoying, oh well, hopefully I wont have to wait too much longer now for it to be fixed.
