My 2002 Mini one seems to be leaking oil but there is no visible leak!! I had it serviced in November 2011 and since then have put in two litres of oil and the car has probably done around only 2000 miles since then.
I also seem to get what sounds like a grinding sound when accelerating hard in 1st 2nd and 3rd,
Anyone had the same problem or know what this could be???
If no oil leaks do you think engine is burning the oil.........what is mileage?
Does the grinding noise only happen when accelerating, does it not occur in 4th and 5th, does it disappear or stay when coasting along in neutral or with clutch pedal depressed? Does it sound engine or gearbox related?
Is your Mini on its original gearbox? Has the gearbox oil ever been changed?
there does seem to be a lot of smoke when its just started but this may just be as the engines cold, the smoke doesnt appear to be blueish either, the mileage is 96,000
yeah the grinding noise does only happen when accelerating and no other time, doesnt seem to occur in 4th or 5th, it dissapears when coasting and in neutral, im not sure could be engine or gearbox
And i have had two gearboxes both re-conditioned the last one about two years ago and the first one went two days after i purchased the car and the garage replaced it, so not much luck with them so far
Im not really a heavy driver and the car isn't driven that often ive done 20,000 in the three years ive owned the car
As mab says midland gear boxes do suffer, from the sound of it it's on it's way out I am sorry to say. But it might be worth getting the oil changed in it first
Was it burning oil before the service or has it just started
what oil are you using ?
From what you discribe it sounds like your valve stem seals are leaking if it smokes from cold, or left for a good length of time.
Check all your crank case breathers are in good condition and are not blocked.
It may be worth getting a leak down check done to make shore you piston rings are ok. That way you can 80% discount the bottom end.
I have a 2009 Mini Cooper S bought used with 46,000+ on it - oil was topped off 1 qt about 3 mths after purchase, no problems but had oil changed in April and lost 3 qts within 3 mths! My mechanic (who is not a Mini mechanic) feels its a turbo issue as I have no oil leaking, just keep checking levels & I should be ok but the Service Engine lite comes on at start-up (in red not yellow) - goes off after 30 seconds. Anyone have a clue as to what is going on with this? Or have suggestions?
