Headlights flash when ignition turns over
When the ignition is turned over it just groans and the headlights flash. Does this mean the battery is dead or is there something else?

How old is the Mini and battery?
Sounds like that is your problem......oringinal BMW branded batteries in earlier Mini's are reaching the end of their life now, usually in winter months.....7 years is average battery life.
