Depends on what you're after... pure no frills fun driving, then the 182 will be a good buy. However, if you want to do that with some style then, I'd say the clio isn't great. I've got a clio as a second car and it just feels so light and flimsy compared to the mini... I know mine is bottom of the range, but the build quality will be on a par I would have thought... Are they not bring out a new Clio soon anyway??... The residual value on the clio will also be very poor... I remember seeing one of them about a year old or so going for £9k
Just did a search to look for pics of the 182 and from what I can see, it's a no brainer. The 182 looks extremely boring and generic, an average looking small car with no personality. Mind you I've never seen one in person over this side of the pond except perhaps when I was over there in May so I don't really know...
I went through a very similar train of thought when I bought my Cooper. For the money I was spending a 182 was actually cheaper.
So I took a test drive in one, first impressions were wow, it is fast and not just slightly fast ridiculously fast, i hit the rev limiter quite a few time on the test drive, just because it goes through the gears so quickly. At the same time the huge amount of power in such a small car did worry me a bit, as I put my foot down accelerating off a roundabout the steering wheel snapped out of my hands I get the impression you have to treat it with quite a bit of respect when driving it quickly, where as the MINI is so chuckable you can drive it flat out everywhere if you want
Anyway basically its a good car, EVO magazine reckon its the best hot hatch you can buy and one of the best performance cars you can buy (they rate it better than an S works )
But it doesn't have the looks, style, build quality and general feel of a quality product that the MINI does.
The Clio will be quicker by far and if you get your kicks from speed alone in a small (ish) motor then that's got to be the choice, but we've owned one Clio, and we'll never go there again, horrible quality and materials, not nice to live with, and from what others have said, they've not moved on much in the few years since we finally got shot of ours.
From memory, EVO only rated the golf GTI and 182 higher than the works, because of value for money... which is totally fine because it is almost £10k cheaper, which you have to take into account... but that doesn't mean it's a better car..... IMHO anyway
Not only have they got faults, they're expensive come service time and from the sound of it the dealerships aren't too hot either.
The thing about the Mini is your buying a package. Yes they are more expensive to buy, but you do get more back. The servicing costs you next to nothing and you get the BMW customer service. My dealership are excellent.
Thanks for all the replies. The Clio would be brand New and is up at about £12,900. Full spec including Leather, Air con, Cup Pack. I just feel that my car will be worth about 9k in 6 months. I am also considering a Lupo GTI. Not too sure tho.

Check the value of your car (guessed) in a year, and the value of the Clio in a year. That's probably a more fair comparison. The Clio will never hold it's value like the MINI.
