Is JCW noisy?

Greetings all! I just ordered my first Mini yesterday (MCSC, JCW, purple haze !) - although we haven't driven a Mini with a JCW package.

After we left the dealership, it dawned on my husband that the JCW might make the Mini sound noisy. We want the power, but we don't want it to sound like a typical "rice boy" car (you can tell a souped up Civic is approaching, blocks away).

No offense to anyone who likes the race car sound, but it's just not for us. Does the JCW package make a big difference in the sound? Does it boom or sound racey?

Just wondering if I should change my order asap. Thanks!

MiniMissy,

I don't think you'll have any problems. I'm also "anti-rice" when it comes to sound and look, and I'm ordering my second JCW car. The sound at startup is a bit deep, and under acceleration you mainly hear the supercharger whine. I think you'll like it a lot.

I also suggest looking up the regional area in the forums and see when the next time a club meets in your area. I'm sure someone would be able to hook you up with a sound check.

Doug

You can have my MINI when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers.

^^^ I agree. I've had my JCW for a year, and I'm also anti-Rice, and this car does not have that sound. It goes silent at highway speeds, and gives a nice mellow sound under acceleration. Stay with the JCW, you'll be happy!

the noise is fine, its not as throaty as some of the aftermarket systems, but it does have a nicer pop-pop and note to it than the standard MCSC

I love mine, and I am sure you will find it as addictive to listen to as I do

Rice boy?? haha... never heard that term before not that it bothers me as my mum is english/spanish and my dad is chinese/american....

anyways, i've just bought the fully optioned JCW mini with an additional upgrade change in the extractors (made by super-sprint) and the car still sounds very refined except from when you really put your foot down past the 4000rev and take in the sexy spooling of the supercharger.... you'll love it!

i myself hate the jap imports coz they just sound horrid... and if riceboys refer to the race that i think it does, i'm surprised that they havent gone deaf. the system in my E46 M3 already gets to me and that not even loud.

But yea... do enjoy your new Mini and whenever possible share some photos

"rice boy" doesn't bother me either.. as long as I can call you "macaroni boy" ^.~
I wanna buy the JCW intake to start with, but have to spend 370 on the Cooper S door sills first ^____^

Australia Is JCW noisy???

Hello MiniMissy, your'e about to move into a league of cars that's way above rice. The sound from your car will be music to your ears, especially when backing off the throttle or you get off the Interstate and on to a winding mountain road.
Your new car will exude quality, not cheap plastic and the engine will sound the same.
I love my JCW, well worth the extra $$ and no-one is going to hear you coming for blocks away. Order your new car with confidence, add niceties like Chilli pack & heated seats & glass roof is nice too.

IMO after owning a MCSJCW for a couple of months the exhaust note is far too 'pony' for my tastes - does sound very girly! I'll be uprating the exhaust at some point without a doubt.

I would agree that it sounds good for a car under warranty etc.. and now factory fitted exhaust. However i would also agree that for some people like me, it needs more volume. So i fitted a Milltek Exhaust Manifold and it now sounds exactly right!! The pops are even loader and harsher than before too!!!

what are you trying to do to me??? Gosh! you've got me looking at other exhausts but i think i better hold back coz my girl-friend isnt too impressed with me spend money on my car. hehe...

i say its better than buying lil handbags that can only fit two items in the one go... ! u recommend the militek huh? just gonna have a browse but will let you know of my decisions.

A JCW is suprisingly noisey from the outside but its so well insulated inside it you dont hear much, plus it dont sound like a honda

i wouldnt say its noisy...i'd say its on the understated side if anything...in fact i would like something that gives it a bit more presence...not the sort of drainpipe exhaust you see on halford's specials, but just something thats a bit more erm menacing. Sort of like the difference between hearing a 1000cc bike on tickover and a 600...a deeper rumble on tick over perhaps.
