There will be lots of names for which is 'best' including Alta, GTT etc

I am looking into getting the GTT myself (look in sponsor directory for more info). The difference in having one of these aftermarket filters is that they are designed to be less restrictive than the standard items and so can flow more air into the engine, therefor more power - this also means they make more noise.

As for actual power gains, I am unsure but someone will be able to help. With previous cars I have always felt improved throttle response.

I have an ALTA CAI and there was a noticeable improvement in throttle response after replacing my OEM air intake with the ALTA. This was also quantified on the dyno which returned a very impressive 10kW+ atw gain. Now I'm a bit dubious about that figure myself, but what isn't deniable is the gain in top end strength as the intake is able to draw in more air at higher revs. From 4000rpm and higher it's a new car. And the sound is sensational!

minigolf, does the new filter pretty much make the supercharger whine all the time? rather than just when your putting the foot down?

This was my first mod.= Ultrik CAI. Throtlle response improvement is very minimal but noticed more above 4K. The sound is also louder but music to my ears. I made a 2.5 inches diameter hole on the back plastic panel to get more fresh air.

no...loudness depends on throttle position. A little throttle will give you a high pitched whistle, and WOT will give you all whine.

A cold air intake is usually enclosed in a box (in the case of ALta and GTT this box is either metal or lined with metal) which shields the cone filter from warm air/heat off the engine or intercooler (if its an S). The shielded box usually has a direct cold air feed (a pipe from the front of the engine bay) that sucks in cold air from outside and straight into the box.

A noirmal intake is either like the stock one in a plastic box with a panel filter or it is an open cone that just sits inside the engine bay with no heat sheilding and usually no direct cold air feed onto the cone filter.

A cold air intake generally gives better power as cold air is denser than warm air and so the bang inside the cylinder of the engine is bigger and more efficient.

PS. It is far easier to find good quality cold air intakes for the Cooper S than the Cooper. The reason is that the engine bay of the S is much warmer (caused by having a supercharger and intercooler wedged under the bonnet and running at far higher temps than a normal aspiration engine) so heat has a very big effect on the S. Most CAIs are made for the S but there are a few (IMO less well developed) versions for the Cooper and ONE.

See the pics below. One is the Alta CAI (this is designed for the Cooper S) and the other is a picture of 'normal' performance filter intake system, like many designed for the Cooper and ONE. Note the metal box and the direct cold feed into the air box (black plastic pipe) on the Alta. The Cooper K&N filter doesn't have this but people have modded thiers to ensure better cold ar feed to the filter, so that pobably helps.

Don't see how they would....I got a Dinan CAI through the dealership installed so in that case I am ok. I don't see what difference other, similar kits would have on warranty. The bottom line is, ask the guys at the service dept.

Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes.....That way if you **** him off, you will be a mile away and he will have no shoes....

Ultimately (apart from filtering) the intake design has one function. To allow the maximum mass of air (oxygen is the bit we want) through. It is a combination of 2 criteria that effect this goal.
1) Minimum possible pressure drop (partial vacuum) through it.- The higher the pressure (ie nearer ambient ) the better .
2) Colder intake air temp. Quite simply a 'bucket full of cold air has more air (by weight) in it than a bucket full of warm air'. -As 21% of 'each bucket 'is oxygen ,we get more oxygen in for a given volume.
Anyone can chuck more fuel ,its getting air in thats the difficult bit.

somehting to note if you have the Cooper is that if you replace the air box you lose the air feed from the front of the engine and all the air that is being sucked in via the cone filter is warm.
I have the K&N 57i Induction kit for my MC and i had to get some flexi tubing to re instate some form of cold air feed from the inlet "mouth" to where the filter site in the empty space once filled with the air box.

Technically the stock MCS air intake filter system is a "Cold Air Intake". It is a sealed intake, no possibilities of hot air intrusion. It draws cold air from 2 high pressure areas on the car. The first is at the grill, the second is from the cowl vent. The biggest impediment to the stock system is their choice of panel filter.

I installed a new foam panel filter and it makes 25 additional hp. not !
