Better fuel economy when chipped (Myth or Fact)

Now theres loads of info out there about chipping your car will increase performance and also give better MPG.

This is true to a degree.

The only way you will see a better MPG is if you drive your car in the same style as you used to. But that requires you staying in the same gears as you used to till a certain speed then changing.
You will notice that you reach certain speeds at a lot less revs as you used to.
If like me you have you're foot to the floor and rev every gear to 5-6000 your fuel won't stick around for long.

I used to get around 300 miles to a tank.

Now I reach 220 maybe a few more on lucky days.

I am happy to give the extra petrol up for the performance i get now.

I am sure a lot of people will disagree with me but its so true

I would love to hear from other people with chipped MINI's and see what you get.

Sounds about right mate to be honest I thought the same ''well ill just drive the same so the fuel won't be no different'' Wrong!!

Ive just filled mine right up so ill let you know what I get £20 the other day got me 150miles(ish) with mostly spirited driving, that was with 15miles left on the range too!!

Hey,

Ive got a chipped cooper with the mth tuner file. I get 250-260 to a tank, which is all i got even when i didn't have the chip.... So while the car 'feels' quicker, ive not gained or lost any economy.

I think your comments are spot on the money Richard. It will only increase fuel economy if you drive in the same style as you did before.

If you utilise the extra power you will see your economy drop.

Simple as that.

ive never properly worked out my MPG as dont have the trip computer and try to ignor how many miles i do as would probably depress me but i enjoy my chipped ONE so yay

Your right it is bolloqs

The only way to improve mpg after a remap is to change up sooner, using the extra torque- as if thats going to happen, youve chipped it to go faster, and if you nail it you will use more fuel.

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying here. Are you suggesting that after chipping, a car will drive at a given speed at lower rpms?

That would require a lot more than a chip, more like new gears in the transmission...

I think he just means you dont need to rev it so much to get to that speed as the engine produces more torque.

When a car is shipped they remap the way the engine works. Changes the fuel pumped into the engine and the timing for the spark plugs. So yes higher speeds at lower revs.

Richard not sure what you are trying to say as it's still confusing.

Picking figures out of thin air. If the car does 70mph at 3000rpm in 6th gear then a chip can in no way change this. The car will always do 70mph at 3000rpm in 6th gear.

This only way to change this would be with gearbox modifications.

The power and torque figures at given rpm's will change though and this could reduce the amount of time it takes to get to these speeds and rpms.

Got my MCS chipped and havent looked back since.

The fuel economy is brilliant. Revs are low, but shes still whining load!!! Lovin it!

Would recommend, thus ive heard it depends on the car....
