Power output

Hi All,

The quoted output for the JCW S is as we know is 210bhp power and 245Nm torque.
Does anyone know for sure if these readings are at the flywheel or at the wheels?

I have asked John Cooper Works and BMW Mini and they gave me different answers!

I have just had my '05 JCW S dyoned and I got the following readings at the flywheel:
Power: 206.6bhp (Approx 175bhp @ wheels)
Torque: 250.6Nm
Ambient temp: 36oC

From these readings I hope the quoted figures are from the flywheel too or else there is something wrong with my car!!

Cheers Mark

They quote the engine power (flywheel) not the power after drivetrain losses etc (wheel) in official figures.

Wow - quick response, thanks Paul!
That being the case, I'm pleased it's so close to the quoted 210bhp given the high ambient temperature.

Hi mate , try driving in middle of the night where the ambient temperature is down to about 24C I am quite sure you are almost there.

my wife's JCW dyno'd at 173.8 whp with only 1257 on the odo.

looks like we are about on par with each other, yours must have been slightly more run in than ours, I'd bet we put down a bit more if we went back there with the 5000 miles that are on her now. . .

most dynos should be corrected for ambient temp. etc. I know the one we ran on was connected to a weather station to automatically get its correction factors for baro pressure, temperature, etc.

Minis rule, but so do Mazda3's, thank goodness I'm running in H-stock now though (only gotta deal with the regular Coopers now). . .

I was up in Cameron Highlands last weekend where it was 19.5oC - even better and the road was amazing!

PS - looks like I am in the same industry as you, I used to be a marine tech supt!

180wHP is about right for a JCW210. Power figures are usually quoted "at the crank". Note the "bHP" versus "wHP". Whereever you have the car dyno'd, ensure they give you power at the wheels that's SAE corrected, otherwise you'll get a skewed result.

Beware some rolling road figures as they can be a bit wild. Example is that recently someone went on a RR with a 220-230ish car and it RR'd at 252bhp (Partly as it was a cold day and partly because they were using a forced induction blower tube with ice cold air right onto the intercooler) Most rolling road figures are not real world figures...good for comparing the same car stock and after mods but not too much use IMO for anything else.

My car RR'd 203 on the same day (supposedly a stock S 163bhp) on a 7200 rev limit so there could be a 200 or so BHP map from MTH or such on it...who knows but it goes to show that the results can be a bit hit and miss.
