1320 Autos One / Cooper Rolling Road Project

Well we actually put the One on the rolling road today. We have performed the following mods

02 Cooper ECU
6 Spd Getrag Gearbox
Alluminum Flywheel
Stock clutch

Other than that everything else is stock as a rock.

The power figures on Tesco 99 were the following;

BHP 129.9 @ 6140
WHP 103.5 @ 6140
TRQ 116.4 @ 4811

Tomorrow

We will fit the exhaust manifold of the our other One and re dyno

We will then have a Cooper S front pipe with a very free flowing silencer from DNA mufflers (sounds like a Honda though) and re dyno

We will keep updating this thread with each modification and post the results.

We plan on fitting

Various cams
CNC Head
Air Filters

We will also be experimenting with various off the wall ideas

If we remember we’ll video it tomorrow on the dyno.

About 4.5bhp in the mid-top end from a manifold, that's not bad for a 1.6 NA engine.

What manifold is this?

We've just tried something and it made 141.6 bhp @ 7127 if we could rev it to 8000rpm we would be laughing, but the area between 4400 -6800 is horrible we lost between 6-18bhp

Which just go to show its not all about the max bhp but the area under the curve, though even with these losses its still better than a stock Mini One

Very interesting Paul, what manifold did you use? 4.5 is not a great improvement so I guess it was a 4-1 manifold, which is not best suited to the one/cooper,but often still fitted regardless.
Also the exhaust/manifold combo was not impressive,it does show that correct matching of components is very important, and simply buying and fitting a mixture of components all individually claiming" x" increase will not result in x + x + x ,they have to work in harmony with one another. I blame ebay
I think you will find the cylinder head restricts a lot of flow ,and trying to drag air through it with an 4-1 hard to say the least.
I do have a manifold here if you would like to try one and have the time to test it,
what diameter is the exhaust pipework? if its too big the one/cooper drops power -sounds good though .
I would expect 14 bhp off manifold and plus 6-8 with exhaust across the rev range

In my eyes the type of manifold that is used on the Mini One/Cooper can drastically alter performance,

for example a friend of mine has had a ported and pollished big valve cylinder head and fast road cam engine conversion done, and on the dyno its producing just over 150bhp with the cat back exhaust, induction kit etc, but she has a performance 4-1 manifold which im only guessing would be producing the bhp but not the torque of a 4-2-1 that MiniMania offer.

What is even more interesting is that i have not yet had an engine conversion, i have the same mods as her, its just the exhaust manifolds are different ( i have a MiniMania 4-2-1). Im producing 135.4bhp and she is producing just over 150bhp and i still pull away from her, ok its only very very slight but it should be the other way round at least!!! I supose its just down to where the torque is in the rev range?

As adam (MiniManiaUK) said the manifold type used when tuning and matching the mods together really is key to getting the max out of our naturally aspirated little 1.6 engine!

Alex

Funnily enough, After i had the Milltek cat back put on i noticed a decrease in torque. And then had the janspeed manifold put on but i never noticed a drop in torque?

Im not saying you will loose torque, just maybe not gain as much or the torque will be at a different place in the rev range. I just would have thought that the 150bhp Mini One would have wooped my 135bhp Mini's back side, instead i was pulling away????

Maybe you are just a better driver? Its also about knowing when to change gear to get the best power to the wheels!

Yeah that may be ture, but the thing is that the driver was infact the owners brother who happens to be one of my best mates, he owns a MiniSpeed/Hartge conversion 250bhp Mini Cooper S. He also used to race in formular renault (his name is John Byrne, if you watch formular renault)
So who knows what it is? maybe there is just something wrong with my mates sisters Mini One.

Cheers Adam I'll be around to pick it up, this is exactly what we want suppliers / manufactures submitting parts for testing .

I'm glad to see that people are thinking out of the box and realising its not all about the peak horsepower.

We will be using a stock air filter as much as we can in testing to see how far we can go and how much of a restriction it is.

I cant see us getting anything else done this week due to the rolling road being flat out and jobs being booked in, though we might have Friday as an R&D day.

Yet again I've had a frustrating weekend off trying to hook up 1100bhp on street tyres, unfortunatley I couldn't get the car to hook up it kept loosing traction after .7 of a sec, I could off blamed the track but when you have 2 racers in the same class as you producing 1600bhp (heavier cars) and can run 8.1s @ 184, blaming the track cant be used as an excuse, instead you have to think outside the box.

So with the One/Cooper we will defintley be thinking out of the box
