its because the emmision flow is so high that the ecu thinks thats the cat is broken and hence the light comes on. The o2 simulator solves this problem compleately. It was a sooper peice of kit for about 25 pounds i think will post the site up:

O2 Simulator

try that
there is a specific mini one i think!

Best bet is a manifold with removable cat....like a GTT one or Janspeed etc etc etc. Then you can just jump underneath undo some bolts and throw the decat on for track days and drag strip

DIY Cheap MOT's!

As my CAT is coming off I thought it a good idea to get it MOT'd before Monday so at least I've got a year before I have to worry about the fact I'm running a de-cat.

I found an interesting thread on another site about local council mot stations being cheaper than your average kwik-fit or local garage by about 20% (just booked mine in for ₤40). The main point though is that they don't repair vehicles for the public, only test them, so there's no financial incentive for them to fail the test unless it's genuinely warranted.

A list of council MOT stations can be found here:

not sure but i m sure its got to be a fair wack aropund the 20bjp with the manifold i would say.

The reason i make this estimate is that you no a mod has to be good when ya can feel the power increase straight away.

A fellow london tunnel runner drives a 355 with a de-cat capristo stage 3 and its monster loud. I was behind him when he got pulled over a few months back, the police made him aware that there was a 75db limit in Kensington at night and that he was easily breaking this. Then they admired his car and sent him on his way. I doubt any police carry emmision testing equipment with them anyway. Do you know of anyone who's been done in the UK?

I don't think our plod look at it the same way as they do in Oz. You're more likely to be pulled up here by the tree hugging police for slowly killing the planet one mile at a time ;-)

my worry with a decat, would not be a fine, or a police order to put it right..
more along the lines of insurance company using this as a get out of jail free card,
eg if you have a prang and they won`t pay out as your now running an illegal car?
so can you declare a DE-cat as a mod to a road car,
if not, you may as well be a 15 yr old asbo in a saxo if some idiot drives into you

Its a fair point but then I look at it with the following equation:

likelihood of crashing (a) x likelihood of insurance company doing a vehicle inspection after crash (b) / insurance company inspector knowing the difference between a decat pipe and cat (c) = Not friggin likely!

Seriously, has anyone actually had their Mini inspected after a crash and not been paid out? I know the Max Power brigade have had issues before but then their cars look from the outside like they've been reversed into a local branch of Halfords and lets face it they can't drive that well anyway. Plus most of them use Adrian Flux or other such companies that find a way of not paying out becuase they know their customers cars are modded.

Do I tell my high street insurance company that my car is modded? No. Do they update me when they change their terms & conditions every five minutes? No. They are as bad as us IMHO.

As far as I see it, keep the outside mods sensible, if you pay for insurance by DD make sure it doesn't bounce and be honest about things like how much mileage you do and where your car is parked every night. That way they have no reason single out you from their millions of other customers.

Here endeth the rant

"Bigshow takes size 14 from out of mouth!"... sorry dude.

A mate of mine has a Celica GT4 and another a 200SX and it was they who told me about people on the SXOC and GT4OC who haven't been paid out by Flux for totally bogus reasons. As a result I just use insurancesupermarket.com to get me the cheapest high street quote. Give them a try at renewal time and de-cat away
