JCW 210 stuttering

I just picked up my car after having the JCW 210 kit fitted.

It's awesome - great noise, big power and lovely delivery.

However, after a long motorway drive, the engine began to hesitate slightly when I floored it from low revs, anyone else experienced this?

It's just a slight stutter, as if something's not right with the tuning or something, is this a normal early conversion gremlin?

A quic search suggests it might be the crank case breather hose - could this cause the stuttering I'm experiencing?

cheers,

Jake

fair point, however I'd like to get a bit more information before I take it in so I can tell the dealer exactly what to look for.

Has anyone else had a similar problem?

The pressure in the crank case will be higher when running more boost so it could be a blocked crank case breather.

If the oil vapour cannot escape from the crank case you will end up burning it in the combustion chamber intead. This has the effect of reducing octane and increase the chance of detonation. It could make the car feel stuttery I guess.

Did they change the plugs as a part of the upgrade too?

cheers for the info Baz, I think it could be the breather as the stuttering is often accompanied by pops from the exhaust.

is it still safe to drive if this is the case?

if it is the crankcase breather pipe, do I need to replace the pipe or just un-block it? Does anyone have a picture of this pipe or a part number for it? (I have to explain it to the garage in Zurich, where they only speak German!)

yes, they did change the plugs as part of the conversion, so I don't think it's a spark problem.

A friend has recently had a stumbling problem with their 210 JCW. The scenario was when sitting at 60 or so (about 2700 rpm), then flooring it the car would "stumble" at about 3000rpm. This would happen in any gear. I describe it as a stumble as it felt like a misfire and the car felt as though something had tugged it backwards sharply. It was sometimes very obvious, others a bit more subtle, but always there. A new supercharger valve seems to have sorted it. I will add that this car had just had new plugs/leads but these did not solve the problem in this case.

Hi all, took the car back to BMW yesterday. Quick ten minute drive with the mechanic was enough for him to conclude it was the spark plugs.

Got the spark plugs changed under guarantee and sure enough, no more stuttering.

Surprising, since the JCW 210 kit comes with new spark plugs - either they weren't changed, they were changed but broke soon after, or they were changed but just happened to be faulty.

Either way the car's now running perfectly, just in time for a trackday on friday

My JCW 210 is stuttering

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but it fits my problems.

I had my 05 JCW serviced on thursday, (inspection 2), so had new spark plugs and air filters.

I drove to work on Friday, and it wasn't running properly. I initially noticed it pulling onto the motorway. I was in 6th at about 50mph (revs about 2000) and as I went to about 3/4 throttle the car stuttered about 3-4 times. It pulls appropriately between stumbles. It felt like a momentary 100% loss of power each time it happened.

I found I could essentially provoke it by replicating the revs and load in 4th 5th and 6th.

I have sent the car back. They can't find anything on the diagnostic computer, and need the car for some time.

Now has anyone any suggestions?

My bet is on either the plugs or contact with the leads.... If this is the case why not at higher revs etc?

James
